Abstract:

SS400 is a new generation steel with ultra-fine grain strengthening. The effect of welding process on the fatigue performance is concerned recently. The fatigue crack growth rate has been investigated for SS400 and its welded joint based on the ASTM E647-83 specification. In the test the compact tension (CT) specimens were used. It is found that there exist two stages with different fatigue crack growth rate for the test steel. In addition both the fatigue crack growth rates in the weld metal and heat affected zone (HAZ) are lower than that in the base metal. The fatigue crack growth rate of the HAZ is between that of the weld metal and base metal. It is clear that the change of microstructure and properties in welded joint does not degrade the fatigue performance of the ultra-fine grained steel.
