Construction error control method of large-span spatial structures based on digital twin SCIE
期刊论文 | 2024 , 98 | JOURNAL OF BUILDING ENGINEERING
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

In the process of construction of large-span spatial structures, there are many control elements, which need to carry on the dual control of internal force and shape. The traditional control method cannot measure the construction deviation completely and accurately, and there is a lag in information feedback. In this paper, spatio-temporal information is integrated into digital twin and a construction error control method is proposed for large-span spatial structures. By analyzing the fusion mechanism of spatio-temporal information and digital twin, a closed-loop control system for structural errors before, during and after construction is formed. Driven by the control architecture, the method of structure simulation analysis and real-time monitoring during construction is proposed, and the functional relationship between cable force and cable length is established. Based on point cloud data, construction error optimization detection method is proposed for structure formation state. The nonlinear relation between elevation change rate and cable force deviation is formed and the control measures of formation state error are obtained. The experimental model of cable truss structure is taken as an example to apply and verify the theoretical method. The construction error control twin platform is formed in the experiment. Driven by the platform, the twinning analysis and real-time monitoring of the construction process are carried out to control the error of the structure formation. The results show that this method integrates spatio-temporal information into digital twin to realize data integration processing. The optimized error detection method can save 30 % time cost and effectively control the construction error within 3 %. The integration of spatio-temporal information and digital twin provides theoretical and algorithm support for the intelligent management and control of large-span spatial structure construction.

A novel Bi-LSTM method fusing current and historical data for tunnelling parameters of shield tunnel SCIE
期刊论文 | 2024 , 49 | TRANSPORTATION GEOTECHNICS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Reasonable shield tunnelling parameters play a crucial role in controlling ground stability and enhancing tunnelling efficiency. Predicting shield tunnelling parameters before excavation is of paramount importance. A novel deep learning method is introduced, integrating bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) layers, and fully connected (FC) layers to fuse current and historical data for shield tunnelling parameters prediction. Historical data captures the impact of excavated sections on the current predicted ring, while current data considers present conditions. A feature fusion method eliminates dimensional differences between historical and current data. The resulting tensor, encompassing both data types, is fed into the FC layer to generate predictions. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated by predicting shield cutter head torque for Qingdao Metro Line 4 in China, outperforming traditional Bi-LSTM, MLP and RF methods significantly. Ablation studies further analyze the impact of different component modules and structural parameters on model performance. Overall, this innovative approach offers accurate shield tunnelling parameters prediction, enhancing ground stability and tunnelling efficiency.

Seismic fragility analysis of underground structures subjected to bi-directional ground motions based on the damage weight coefficients of components SCIE
期刊论文 | 2024 , 178 | SOIL DYNAMICS AND EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

The seismic resilience of underground structures is generally based on the results of the seismic fragility analysis and the damage of all the structural components comprehensively. Whereas, the seismic behavior of underground structures is greatly influenced by the vertical ground motions. Therefore, this paper proposed a new method to study the seismic fragility of underground structures subjected to both horizontal and vertical ground motions, and by considering the damage weight coefficients of the structural components to the overall structure. Pushover/pseudo-gravity analyses were conducted to determine the demand measures and seismic performance levels of all the structural components. Then the intensity measures of earthquakes were determined and the seismic fragility curves of structural components were built by combining the seismic performance levels of structural components and the 3D incremental dynamic analyses on the underground structures. Meanwhile, according to the damage probability of each structural component, the damage weight coefficients of components to the damage of the overall structures were calculated. After that, the seismic fragility surfaces of the underground structures were built and the seismic fragility of the structures was discussed. The method developed in this study could not only be used to evaluate the damage probability of underground structures caused by the vertical ground motions, but also to evaluate the damage probability and post -earthquake repairability of the components.

Experimental study on pore structures and mechanical properties of ferroaluminate cement under sulfate attack SCIE
期刊论文 | 2024 , 97 | JOURNAL OF BUILDING ENGINEERING
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Ferroaluminate cement (FAC) emerges as a special cement with outstanding durability, offering promising applications. However, the resistance to sulfate attack of FAC remains inadequately understood. In this paper, the impact of sulfate attack on the pore structure of FAC concrete is explored through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tests from a microscopic perspective. Meanwhile, the macroscopic mechanical characteristics of concrete attacked by sulfate are investigated under different loading conditions, including splitting tensile and conventional triaxial compression. NMR test analysis shows that as the degree of erosion increases, the number of mesopores and macropores in FAC concrete decreases while the number of micropores increases. The changes in pore structure distribution alter the mechanical response of specimens. The discussion of strength characteristics, deformation behavior, and energy parameters in conventional triaxial tests reveals that FAC concrete attacked by sulfate exhibits superior mechanical properties under confining pressure. Uniaxial strength results indicate that sulfate attack has less impact on specimens under tensile stress state than under compression. Based on the experimental findings, this paper introduces a sulfate attack impact factor to capture the uniaxial strength changes. Further, a multiaxial strength criterion is developed to describe the strength properties of sulfate-attacked concrete under triaxial stress conditions.

Collapse behavior and mechanical response of the cobble stratum during the shield driving SCIE
期刊论文 | 2023 , 144 | TUNNELLING AND UNDERGROUND SPACE TECHNOLOGY
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

The cobble stratum is prone to collapse during the shield driving. It is important to understand the collapse behavior of cobble stratum for construction safety of the tunnel. Taking Tsinghuayuan Tunnel in Beijing as the background, a test of shield tunnelling in the cobble stratum is performed using the model shield with the diameter of 280 mm. A total of 5 collapse pits occur on the ground surface during the test process. The settlements at the surface and subsurface are measured to analyze the collapse process of the cobble stratum, as well as the earth pressure in the region above the tunnel crown. The quadratic partial derivative of the settlement and earth pressure are used to judge the collapse moment of the soil. The test results show that the collapse of the cobble stratum develops with a uniform speed from the bottom to up with the shield advancing, and that the collapse region extends to the surface after the cutter head passes through the center of the collapse pit 0.5D similar to 1.0D. Meanwhile, the final earth pressure is much smaller than its initial value only in the region above the tunnel crown, indicating the collapse region concentrating in the position directly above the crown in the crosssection. In addition, the shape of surface settlement trough changes significantly with the collapse development. Development curves of two characterization physical quantities of the surface settlement trough, i.e., the maximum settlement and width coefficient, are respectively close to the "S" shape and the inverse "S" shape.

A hydro-mechanical constitutive model for unsaturated soils over a wide saturation range SCIE
期刊论文 | 2023 , 159 | COMPUTERS AND GEOTECHNICS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

A hydro-mechanical constitutive model for unsaturated soils is proposed to describe the hydraulic and me-chanical behaviour over a wide saturation range. Bishop's effective stress and the effective degree of saturation are taken as the basic constitutive variables. A simple and novel loading-collapse yield curve is constructed to capture the variation of the yield stress with the hydraulic state over a wide saturation range. A non-orthogonal plastic flow rule is adopted to obtain the direction of the plastic strain increment. A simple water retention model is developed to describe the hydraulic behaviour of unsaturated soils. The proposed constitutive relation is presented through the calculation of the total strain increment and the calculation of the increment of the effective degree of saturation. All material parameters can be determined through conventional laboratory tests. The performance of the proposed model is illustrated through numerical examples of three classical stress paths, i.e., the isotropic compression path with constant suction, the wetting path with constant net stress, and the triaxial shearing path with constant suction and mean net stress. The capability of the proposed model to capture the hydraulic and mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soils is validated by simulating the test results from the literature.

PSO-based Machine Learning Methods for Predicting Ground Surface Displacement Induced by Shallow Underground Excavation Method SCIE

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Four hybrid intelligent methods are developed to predict the maximum ground surface settlement (S-max) induced by shallow underground excavation method (SUEM). Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with k-fold cross validation is used to determine the optimal hyperparameters or random parameters in the four machine learning (ML) methods, namely that, back-propagation neural network (BPNN), extreme learning machine (ELM), support vector regression (SVR) and random forest (RF). 100 field engineering samples are collected from published papers. In each data sample, the effect of stratum mechanical conditions, tunnel geometric parameters and construction parameters on S-max is considered. Correlation laws among parameters are investigated through Pearson correlation coefficient, data distribution histogram and correlation confidence ellipse. The performance of four PSO-based ML methods is comprehensively compared by fitness function, time cost and prediction accuracy in the training and test processes. PSO-RF outperforms PSO-SVR, PSO-ELM and PSO-BPNN in the prediction accuracy for S-max owing to larger R-2, smaller MAE and RMSE. Calculation time that the optimal hyperparameters are determined is the fastest for PSO-RF, and PSO-ELM has the smallest fitness function. The prediction performance of PSO-RF method for construction parameters is also discussed. This work can provide theoretical guidance for design and construction of SUEM.
