To solve the problems during the process of direct nitridation for AlN powders synthesis, Zn element with a high saturated vapor pressure was used as alloy element of starting materials, and the effect of additive Zn element on the synthesis of AlN for Al-Zn and Al-Mg-Zn systems was investigated. The results show that the volatilization of Zn can destroy the nitrided layer on the surface of alloy melt to prevent the agglomeration and improve the productive rate of AlN. On the other hand, Zn element has been proved not to be a good deoxidizer as Mg element to avoid the formation of Al2O3. Thus, Al-Mg-Zn alloy is considered as a better starting material for the direct nitridation method to obtain pure AlN powders with lower oxygen and metal residues.
