Teaching evaluation can generally be divided into for-mative evaluation and summative evaluation. For a long time, the summative evaluation with final examinations and English knowledge tests as the main parts has been the major way of test-ing and evaluation in China''s college English teaching, but sum-mative evaluation neglects the learning process. The application of formative evaluation to college English teaching is mainly dis-cussed in this paper, aiming to help teachers introduce formative evaluation into college English teaching more effectively.
