A novel lanthanum molybdenyl iodate, La(MoO2)(OH)(IO3)(4), has been prepared by hydrothermal reactions at 170 degrees C. The X-ray single-crystal structural analysis showed that it crystallizes in the polar and chiral space group P2(1) with a = 7.0513(7) angstrom, b = 14.225(1) angstrom, c = 7.1206(8) angstrom, beta = 115.653(8)degrees, Z= 2, R1/wR2 = 0.0269/0.0608 for 2828 observed reflections, and 191 parameters. La(MoO2)(OH)(103)4 contains a complex three-dimensional network formed by eight co-ordinated La3+ cations, strongly distorted octahedral Mo(VI) centers, and bridging iodate anions. Infrared spectra further confirmed the presence of MoO66- 6- and IO3- groups as well as Mo-OH interactions. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
