Aiming at the problems of large power consumption, serious heat-fade and failure to recover braking energy of the conventional eddy current retarder, a new electromagnetic liquid-cooled energy recovery retarder was proposed based on the principle of eddy current brake and regenerative brake. The new retarder is composed of a liquid cooled eddy current retarder and a single-phase reluctance motor. The electromagnetic field model of the new retarder was established by fmite element method, the eddy current braking performance of the new retarder was predicted, the opening and closing angles of the reluctance motor were optimized, and energy recovery power was calculated during downhill continuous braking. The simulation results showed that the eddy current braking torque reached 1560N.m at 1500r/min, and the energy recovery power reached about 30 kW when the vehicle was slowed down at speed of 35Km/h.
