Abstract:

On the basis of reviewing the resource utilization of sludge in water supply plants, this paper summarizes the application of iron sludge from water plants using iron and manganese containing groundwater as water source. This iron sludge is generated in the backwashing process of the filters for biological iron and manganese removal. It has large specific surface area and the main component is gamma-FeOOH, which has a high affinity for arsenic, a common water pollutant with strong toxicity. Therefore, the removal of arsenic from water can be achieved through this sludge. What's more, the sludge is modified to prepare magnetic adsorbents and granular adsor-bents, in order to solve the problem that it cannot easily be separated from water after use. This manuscript mainly summarizes the development of arsenic removal technology by iron sludge. Various types of arsenic removal adsorbents are introduced in detail. It provides a reference for both the utilization of iron-manganese sludge and the removal of arsenic from water. Also at the end the existing problems, possible solutions and difficulties in engineering application are discussed.
