Immobilized Anammox granules were used as sequential biocatalyst addition to substitute particulate sludge for starting up Anammox reactor, and the kinetic characteristics of the immobilized granules were investigated through batch tests. The reactor could be successfully started up in 49 d with immobilized Anammox granules as sequential biocatalyst addition, and the removal rates of NH4+-N and NO2--N were 80.7% and 83.1%, respectively. Kinetics study showed that the half saturation constants for ammonium and nitrite of the immobilized granules were 1.57 mmolL-1 and 1.505 mmolL-1, the half inhibition constants of ammonium and nitrite were 724.2 mmolL-1 and 66.65 mmolL-1, respectively. The immobilized granules were easier to gain substrate in adverse environment and could suffer higher substrate concentration. The better kinetic performance of the immobilized Anammox granules contributed to the successful biomass supplementation performance, which was helpful for the novel biomass supplementation process for enhancement of Anammox performance. ©, 2015, Chemical Industry Press.
