The stable performance of aerobic granular sludge would be affected by various factors. The type of carbon source was reported to have impact on the synthesis of poly hydroxy acid lipid (PHA), consequently affect the stability of the aerobic granular sludge. In this study, the aerobic granular sludge was cultivated with the mixed carbon source, and the effect of different carbon source on the PHA synthesized by aerobic granular sludge was investigated. The tests were conducted with 8kinds of carbon source including sodium acetate, methanol, glucose, maltose, starch, sugar, glutamic sodium and peptone. The results showed that the aerobic granular sludge had better performance for transforming the sodium acetate and sugar to PHA, with the storage capacity reached up to 102.19 mgCOD/g·VSS and 70.58 mg COD/g·VSS, respectively. This was significantly higher than the value using the other carbon source, which was in the range of 5~20 mg/g·VSS. Therefore, it was beneficifal to maintain the stable performance of granular sludge by using sugar and sodium acetate as carbon source.
