This paper presents an overview of research on multi-field coupled mechanics for typical intelligent soft materials, including polymer gels, hydrogels, articular cartilage and so on. Attention is paid to the fundamental theory and research methods of thermoelectrochemo- mechanical coupling behavior for such materials. We review the typical progresses in major research groups over the world. Based on a phenomenological thermodynamics theory and the Hamilton principle, we establish a general theoretical framework on thermoelectrochemo- mechanical coupling problem. In particular, for the structural relation and governing equations of an isothermal chemo-mechanical coupled system, we show the theoretical framework gives a closed system. The finite element formulation and one-dimensional analytical solution of the chemo-mechanical coupled systems are obtained. Several numerical examples are used to illustrate the multi-field coupled behavior of hydrogels and articular cartilages. Finally, the research topics and future trends on the multi-field coupling for intelligent soft materials are discussed. © 2014 Advances in Mechanics.
