With the development of high-performance steel (HPS) in the modern steel structures, the basic members of prestressed steel structures, i. e. the prestressed stayed column will have a significant influence on the overall stability behavior. The elastic buckling analysis of ordinary steel material prestressed stayed column and ordinary column were studied with the finite element analysis software ANSYS. The finite element model was verified by comparison with the theoretical results. Then the non-linear buckling analysis considering material nonlinearity, geometric nonlinearity and the initial imperfection was conducted to compare the influence of the steel material type on the overall stability behavior of prestressed stayed column and ordinary column. The results show that with the use of prestressed stayed system and HPS, the stability load-carrying behavior of axial compression column are improved substantially.
