In order to find out the removal efficiency of nutrient pollution of real saline sewage and the influence of salinity shock, a lab-scale nutrient removal activated sludge system, based on the MUCT configuration, is modified to treat 10 g/L saline sewage. The results indicate that after domestication of microorganism at 10 g/L salinity, the total organic nitrogen and phosphorus average removal efficiency can achieve 87% and 72% respectively. The nutrient removal efficiency was also changed under different salinity shock. The salinity shock, especially increased salinity shock, influences phosphorus removal efficiency much more than the removal efficiency of nitrogen and organic matter.
