Using 3-dimensional (3D) sound sources as secondary sources in 2-dimensional (2D) sound field reproduction is termed as 2.5-dimensional (2.5D) reproduction. In this paper, a method of 2.5D sound field reproduction by using a circular array of 3D higher order (HO) loudspeakers is proposed. Based on the spherical addition theorem, interior sound field is accurately reproduced by the proposed method, which is completed with a significantly attenuated exterior sound field. Then, the proposed method is extended to speech signal reproduction. For speech signals, the approach provides a potential solution for real world speech applications as well. The test results indicate that the proposed method restrains the exterior sound field energy effectively compared to the referenced method. Furthermore, the quality of the reproduced speech signal within interest region is close to the origin signal. © 2016 IEEE.
