This study investigated the delay caused by passengers at bus rapid transit (BRT) station, which has heavy volume in China. Data from 379 BRT stations was collected at BRT line 1 and BRT line 2 in Jinan city in 2010 and 2011. Hypothesizing each passenger getting on or off takes fixed time when the density of passengers in BRT is fixed, and there is retardation for the time as the density rises up, relationship models were proposed. Parameters were estimated by regression from 320 survey data, and the model was tested from other 59 data. Preliminary results indicate that: (1) There is a linear relationship between berthing time and the number of passengers getting on or off; (2) The time for each passenger getting on is longer than getting off; (3) When the density of passengers in BRT increases, the retardation for each passenger getting on will rise. © 2012 American Society of Civil Engineering.
