Currently RFID technology is typically applied to toll the electronic toll collection; there are no precedents to apply frequency identification technology to speed collection. Pedestrian is the largest traffic group in China, but the current domestic technology for pedestrians' speed collecting is also a considerable lack. RFID-based Pedestrian speed collection with a reader, locators and tags will be a good technical reserve. With more data and more accurate pedestrian speed, traffic managers can be provided a good reference. In this study, RFID is used to capture pedestrian speed, first, we selected the device parameters, measured the experiment distance; and then measured the travel time of pedestrians, while using two different methods to collect travel time, one is the stopwatch collecting as the true value of travel time, the other one is the RFID collecting; then, by comparing the RFID collection data with the true values we obtained that the speed error rate is 8.11%, and thus determined the feasibility of RFID collection method; Finally, we think about whether RFID technology can be used in real-time acquisition of speed in the actual intersections, and how this method is extended to non-motor vehicles and motor vehicle speed acquisition. © 2011 IEEE.
