Abstract:

This paper aims at providing valuable references for managers' decision-making as well as researchers and engineers' further researches with a comprehensive survey on urban city traffic signal control. Urban transportation system in China is different from other countries, as it is a complex mixed system which is composed of surface way network, expressway network, and their integration-expressway ramps, running mixed traffic flow of vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians. Therefore, the urban traffic control system is a large complex nonlinear system which poses many new problems and challenges for traffic signal control methods. This paper extensively analyzes the research development of traffic signal control methods in surface way and freeway networks, and introduces the current and potential issues of the management of traffic congestions happening in the networks.
