In order to determine validity and applicability of numerical simulation of mesoscopic tensile fracture process of concrete using the cohesive elements, based on the cohesive crack model theory, by embedding cohesive interface elements inside solid finite element meshes, two-graded concrete specimen of Dongjiang arch dam were numerically simulated under uniaxial tension. The number of aggregates according to the aggregate content and average diameter of aggregate for one grading were calculated, the Monte Carlo method was used to generate the random aggregate model. The effects of mesh density of the cohesive element, aggregate distribution and fracture parameter used for aggregate-mortar interface elements on the damage mode and macro mechanical properties were investigated. The results indicate that it is an efficient method to simulate the fracture process of concrete materials with the zero-thickness cohesive elements and macro-mechanical properties.
