A real-time control strategy was proposed for parallel hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) based on wavelet neural network to control the torque distribution for the improvement of fuel economy in hybrid electric vehicle. A wavelet neural network controller was adopted in control strategy to control hybrid powertrain online. The controller was trained by the control management rules, which came from instantaneous optimization control strategy. This control strategy was implemented on a PHEV prototype in ADVISOR. Simulation results demonstrate that this control strategy not only satisfies the fuel economy, but also overcomes the defect of instantaneous optimization control strategy that can not be used in real driving condition.
