Ca3Co4O9 powders were synthesized by the tartaric acid complexing sol-gel method using metal nitrate as raw materials. The pyrolytic decomposition mechanism of the gel and formation process of Ca3Co4O9 were investigated by DTA-TG, XRD, FT-IR and SEM etc. The results show that nitrate ions accelerate the decomposition of the gel, and the platelike Ca3Co4O9 powders with the mean size of 0.6 μm can be obtained after the dry gel calcined at 750°C for 2 h.
