It was different to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity of the wastewater treatment industry in China, owing to a lack of research and demonstration experience. This study aims to predict hyper-treated-quantity functional performance and provide a guidance for its real operation to assess the GHG emission in a full-scale anaerobic-anoxic-oxic membrane bioreactor (A(2)O + MBR) process in Beijing. The emulated result illustrated that activated sludge model (ASM) offers broad applicability to predict functional performance during hyper-treated-quantity operational periods. The running results show that the GHG emission intensity decreased from 1.31 to 1.24 CO(2)e/m(3), representing a 5.3% decline in 2022, despite the total annual GHG emission increasing by 42.69% compared to the levels in 2018. Further, the GHG emission intensity of CH4, N2O, electricity consumption and chemical agent consumption decreased by 7.4%, 7.1%, 4.9% and 12.5%, respectively. The proportion of CH4, N2O, electricity and chemical agent consumption accounted for 20.38%, 31.89%, 47.67% and 0.06% of the total GHG emission, showing minimal changes compared to those in 2018. Overall, this research provides valuable insights to policy-makers regarding water and carbon issue, assisting them in identifying to find low-risk and cost-effective solutions to reduce climate change impact.

Reductive sequestration of Cr (VI) by phosphorylated nanoscale zerovalent iron SCIE

The cracked phosphorylated nanoscale zerovalent iron (p-nZVI) has a strong electron selectivity towards the reductive removal of many heavy metal ions in waters. However, the unintended environmental risk after interactions with impurities or wastewater are not involved. Therefore, in this study, the phosphate group was successfully adsorbed into p-nZVI, and the cracked p-nZVI was successfully prepared with an optimal P/Fe ratio of 0.5%. The dosages of p-nZVI and temperatures were positively correlated with the removal rates. The removal process of Cr(VI) was more suitable by the Langmuir isothermal model (R-2 > 0.99). The process of Cr (VI) (10, 20 and 40 mg/L) removal more fitted the pseudo first-order reaction model, while the process of Cr (VI) (60, 80 mg/L) removal more fitted the pseudo second-order reaction model. The Cr (VI) removal rates gradually decreased when the pH was increased. Dissolved oxygen slowed nanoiron reaction rates. The order of inhibition on the reactivity towards Cr(VI) was SiO32- > SO42- > PO43- > NO3- > HCO3-.The facilitation followed the order of Cd2+ > Cu2+ > Mg2+ > Mn2+ > Ca2+. Ca2+ showed an inhibitory effect, but all other cations showed different degrees of facilitation. The promotion effect is relatively similar in presence of Mn2+ or Mg2+. HA had a significant inhibitory effect. Environmental friendly p-nZVI had a good effect in simulated groundwater, seawater, river water and secondary effluent of the urban sewage treatment plant. The main pathway to remove Cr (VI) was in situ reduction by p-nZVI. The improved adsorption and reduction effect of p-nZVI on heavy metal ions in water was due to the structural change and the phosphate group.

In the research, sulfide nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) was synthesized, characterized and further applied to remove hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) from water. The results showed that a maximum adsorption (81 mg/g) and repeatability was reached at a sulfur/iron molar ratio of 0.1. Sulfide modification could form amorphous FeS on the surface of nZVI, which enhanced the antioxidant activity and hydrophobicity of S-nZVI0.1. The removal of Cr (VI) by S-nZVI0.1 was in accordance with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model with the theoretical removal capacity of 83.51 mg/g. After aging 45 d, 60 mg/g of Cr(VI) still was adsorbed by S-nZVI0.1, suggesting that S-nZVI0.1 exhibited a better stability. 84.1 % of Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) on the surface of S-nZVI0.1, Fe0, FeS, Fe2+ and S2- were involved in the reduction reaction. This study provided guidance for synthesizing well stability and high reaction of S-nZVI to remove Cr(VI).

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) has received more attention due to its high reactivity in removing contaminants. However, assessing reactivity requires time and cost savings to improve the potential applicability of nZVI. In this study, a model for Cr(VI) removal by nZVI was established to simulate the changes of various ions during the reaction. The aim was to elucidate the reduction mechanism and provide a new method for calculating electron efficiency. And we calibrated the parameters through experimental data and characterization analysis, which improved the reliability of the model. In addition, we discussed the specific effects of the initial concentration and initial pH of Cr(VI) on electron efficiency and reactivity. The results indicated that the initial concentration and initial pH primarily affected the electron efficiency by altering the utilization efficiency of active sites and the corrosion degree of nZVI. At pH values of 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11, the electron efficiencies were 39.18%, 47.56%, 58.81%, 59.12%, and 84.19%, respectively. We found that both nZVI and Fe(II) had reduction effects, but which one played the major role depended on the reaction conditions. Finally, the possible reaction mechanisms were analyzed by combining experiments, models, and characterizations. The whole reaction process was divided into three stages: pollutant adsorption, electron transfer process, and mass transfer process.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) is more valuable in environmental restoration than other materials. Chemical treatment of fly ash (CFA) was employed as a support material to disperse iron nickel bimetal nanoparticles (CFA-nZVI/Ni) to remove 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). Batch experiments showed that 2,4-DCP was completely removed by CFA-nZVI/Ni, and an optimal loading ratio was 8:1. The degradation of 2,4-DCP by CFA-nZVI/Ni was a chemical control reaction with an activation energy of 95.6 kJ mol(-1) and followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. The addition of Cl- increased the removal rate of 2,4-DCP by 4%, while the addition of CO32- and SO42- decreased the removal rate of 2,4-DCP by 32% and 72.3%, respectively. The removal process of 2,4-DCP by CFA-nZVI/Ni included adsorption and reduction. The 2-CP (7.1 mg/L) and 4-CP (11.6 mg/L) could be converted to phenol using the CFA-nZVI/Ni system. Cl on the para-position of 2,4-DCP was simpler to remove than on the ortho-position. The following steps were taken in the electrophilic substitution reaction between substituted phenols and hydrogen radicals: 2,4-DCP > 2-CP > 4-CP > phenol. This research provides a novel concept to effectively remove 2,4-DCP and mechanism analysis.

为了提高纳米铁的活性和分散性,在醇水体系下制备出纳米钯铁(Pd/Fe)双金属颗粒并表征,将制得的纳米Pd/Fe颗粒应用于水中2,4-二氯苯酚(2,4-DCP)的去除,考察了材料投加量、反应温度、初始pH值、2,4-二氯苯酚初始浓度等因素对2,4-DCP去除的影响,分析了2,4-DCP的去除机理并进行动力学拟合.结果表明,在醇水体系中制备纳米铁有利于纳米颗粒的稳定分散;钯的加入将脱氯途径转变为催化加氢,极大改善了2,4-DCP的去除效果;当2,4-DCP初始浓度为20 mg/L、反应温度30℃、纳米Pd/Fe颗粒投加量为2 g/L时,2,4-DCP可在5 h内去除99.9%;反应过程符合修正的一级反应动力学方程.
