In this work, the graphene composite sheets coated with metal were equivalent to composite laminated sheets. The nonlinear coupling vibrations of graphene composite laminated sheets (GCLSs) under particle impact were investigated. The size-dependent effect and viscoelasticity were incorporated to model GCLSs in the nonlocal continuum theory and Kelvin-Voigt model framework. Particle impact was regarded as stochastic excitation on the GCLS. According to the von Karman strain-displacement relationship for the geometric nonlinearity and Reddy's third-order shear deformation plate theory, the nonlinear governing partial differential equations were derived. To examine the validity of this model, a comparison with published results was carried out. With the purpose of ensuring the convergence and reliability of the results, a large number of mode truncations were performed. The emphasis of numerical simulations was placed on studying how the various factors, including the size-dependent effect, forcing amplitude, and viscoelasticity, influencing the nonlinear responses of GCLS. The motivation of this study is to present a novel model providing both practical and theoretical guidance for devices involving graphene composites subjected to particle impacts.

A Novel Aerodynamic Force and Flutter of the High-Aspect-Ratio Cantilever Plate in Subsonic Flow SCIE

This paper focuses on the derivation of the aerodynamic force for the cantilever plate in subsonic flow. For the first time, a new analytical expression of the quasi-steady aerodynamic force related to the velocity and the deformation for the high-aspect-ratio cantilever plate in subsonic flow is derived by utilizing the subsonic thin airfoil theory and Kutta-Joukowski theory. Results show that aerodynamic force distribution obtained theoretically is consistent with that calculated by ANSYS FLUENT. Based on the first-order shear deformation and von Karman nonlinear geometric relationship, nonlinear partial differential dynamical equations of the high-aspect-ratio plate subjected to the aerodynamic force are established by using Hamilton's principle. Galerkin approach is applied to discretize the governing equations to ordinary differential equations. Numerical simulation is utilized to investigate the relation between the critical flutter velocity and some parameters of the system. Results show that when the inflow velocity reaches the critical value, limit cycle oscillation occurs. The aspect ratio, the thickness, and the air damping have significant impact on the critical flutter velocity of the thin plate.

Nonlinear transient responses of rotating twisted FGM cylindrical panels SCIE CSCD

This paper develops a new structure dynamic model to investigate nonlinear transient responses of the rotating blade made of functionally graded material (FGM). The rotating blade is simplified as a rotating FGM cylindrical panel with a presetting angle and a twist angle. The geometric nonlinearity effects are taken into account in the strain-displacement relationships, which are derived by Green strain tensor. Based on the first-order piston theory and the first-order shear deformation theory, the equations of motion for the rotating twisted FGM cylindrical panel are acquired by means of Hamilton principle and Galerkin method. Backward Differentiation Formula (BDF) and Runge-Kutta Algorithm are used to solve the nonlinear equations of motion for the system. The effects of four pulse load conditions on the system subjected to the internal pulse load or the external pulse load are fully discussed. A detailed parametric analysis is performed by considering the effects of the rotating speed, volume fraction index and temperature.

In this study, we investigate the targeted energy transfer (TET) from a simply supported beam that is subjected to thermal variations and external excitations to a local nonlinear energy sink (NES). We derive the governing equation of motion for the beam with an NES device and study the influences of NES parameters on the vibration-suppressing effect. We obtain the optimized parameters of the NES under constant-amplitude harmonic excitation at room temperature. The optimized NES gradually loses its vibration absorption efficiency as the excitation amplitude and temperature increase. We change the nonlinear stiffness of the NES to mitigate the influence of temperature variation and show that NES efficiency can be enhanced by reducing the nonlinear stiffness. We propose a variable-stiffness NES, and the results demonstrate this NES is best for maintaining efficiency over the whole temperature range. We also analyze the transient responses of the system under impulse loads. Results indicate that, like the performance of the system subjected to harmonic excitation, an NES with relatively low stiffness can better suppress vibration with increasing impulse amplitude and temperature.

Due to strong nonlinear, unsteady characteristics and the fluid-structure interaction effect, vibration analysis of blades under the excitation of the airflow is still one of the technical difficulties. In this paper, the accurate subsonic aerodynamic force is obtained through numerical simulation, and the aerodynamic coupling model of the rotary blade is established. The distribution of the aerodynamic force of the compressor blade under the unsteady airflow is focused on. The blade is modeled as presetting a presetting pre-twisted rotary cantilever plate. Dynamic frequencies of the plate, calculated by Chebyshev-Ritz method, are compared with frequencies calculated using the finite element method (FEM). Effects of different parameters on natural frequencies of the rotary plate are discussed. Based on von-Karman nonlinear geometric relation and the first-order shear deformation theory, nonlinear dynamic equations of the pre-twisted rotary plate under the combination of the centrifugal force and the aerodynamic are derived by utilizing Hamilton's principle. Second-order ordinary differential equations are derived by applying the Galerkin method. Analytical solution of the dynamic deformation of the plate is presented and is compared with that produced by FEM. Results indicate the accuracy of the explicit presentation of the aerodynamic of the low-pressure compressor blade. Effects of the rotary speed, the thickness, the pre-twisted angle and the presetting angle on vibration characteristics of the warping blade are studied. Mode shape shift and frequency loci veering are discussed.

Turbo-machineries, as key components, have a wide utilization in fields of civil, aerospace, and mechanical engineering. By calculating natural frequencies and dynamical deformations, we have explained the rationality of the series form for the aerodynamic force of the blade under the subsonic flow in our earlier studies. In this paper, the subsonic aerodynamic force obtained numerically is applied to the low pressure compressor blade with a low constant rotating speed. The blade is established as a pre-twist and presetting cantilever plate with a rectangular section under combined excitations, including the centrifugal force and the aerodynamic force. In view of the first-order shear deformation theory and von-Karman nonlinear geometric relationship, the nonlinear partial differential dynamical equations for the warping cantilever blade are derived by Hamilton's principle. The second-order ordinary differential equations are acquired by the Galerkin approach. With consideration of 1:3 internal resonance and 1/2 sub-harmonic resonance, the averaged equation is derived by the asymptotic perturbation methodology. Bifurcation diagrams, phase portraits, waveforms, and power spectrums are numerically obtained to analyze the effects of the first harmonic of the aerodynamic force on nonlinear dynamical responses of the structure.

Piezoelectric vibration energy harvesting has attracted considerable attention because of its prospects in self-powered electronic applications. There are a many low-velocity waters in nature, such as rivers, seas and oceans, which contain abundant hydrokinetic energy. In this paper, an optimal geometric piezoelectric beam combining magnetic excitation is identified and applied to a vortex-induced vibration energy harvester (ViVEH) for low velocity water flow, which is composed of a continuous variable-width piezoelectric beam carrying a cylindrical bluff body. The finite element simulation and experiment are first carried out to study the harvesting characteristics of the designed variable-width beam ViVEH without considering the magnetic excitation. The influence of the width-ratio and flow velocity on the harvesting voltage is studied in detail. The optimal structure, a ViVEH equipped with triangular piezoelectric beam, is then obtained by the superior energy harvesting performance for low velocity water flow. From the experimental results, at a flow velocity of 0.6 m/s, the highest root mean square (RMS) voltage and RMS voltage per unit area are 19.9 V and 0.07 V/mm(2), respectively. Furthermore, magnetic excitation is introduced to improve the scavenging performance of the optimal triangular beam ViVEH, different polarity arrangements are compared, and the optimal case, the arrangement of horizontal repulsion and vertical attraction (HR-VA), is obtained. This case can scavenge the highest power of 173 mu W at a flow velocity of 0.5 m/s, which is increased by 127% compared to a conventional constant-width beam ViVEH with no magnetic excitation.

This paper presents an experimental study of the broadband energy harvesting and dynamic responses of an L-shaped piezoelectric cantilever beam. Experimental results show that the L-shaped piezoelectric beam generates two optimal voltage peaks when the horizontal beam size is similar to the vertical beam size. Several optimized L-shaped piezoelectric cantilever beam structures are proposed. Power generation using the inverted bistable L-shaped beam is better. It is observed experimentally that the inverted bistable L-shaped beam structure shows obvious bistable characteristics and hard spring characteristics. Furthermore, the corresponding relationship between the bistable phase portrait and the potential energy curve is found in the experiment. This is the first time that a phase portrait for stiffness hardening of an L-shaped beam has been found experimentally. These results can be applied to analysis of new piezoelectric power generation structures. Graphic abstract

This paper investigates the nonlinear vibrations of the rotating pretwisted cylindrical panel under higher-frequency primary resonance and lower-frequency primary resonance for the case of 1:2 internal resonances. An accurate strain-displacement relationship is derived by the Green strain tensor. First-order shear deformation theory and Hamilton principle are utilized to establish the partial differential governing equation of the rotating cylindrical panel. Galerkin approach is employed to obtain the two-degree-of-freedom nonlinear system, which contains coupling between linear stiffness terms of the two transverse modes. The method of multiple scales is used to obtain the modulation equations for the amplitudes and phases. Numerical simulations are performed to show amplitude-frequency responses and bifurcation behaviors of the system. Two types of numerical methods are compared to describe the amplitude-frequency responses of the system. The results show the accuracy of our proposed method. The effects of the detuning parameter, the damping coefficient and the excitation amplitude on amplitude-frequency responses and bifurcation behaviors are fully discussed.

This paper focuses power generation and nonlinear dynamic behaviors on a new bistable piezoelectric-electromagnetic energy harvester. Three different kinds of piezoelectric cantilever beam structures, which include the monostable piezoelectric cantilever beam, the bistable piezoelectric cantilever beam with spring and magnet, and the bistable piezoelectric cantilever beam with spring, magnet, and coil, are designed. The power generation efficiency and dynamic behaviors for each structure are experimentally studied, respectively. Due to the spring introduced, the system easily goes through the potential barrier. Experimental results show that the power generation structure of the bistable piezoelectric-electromagnetic harvester can vibrate between two steady states in a wider range of the frequency. Therefore, the effective frequency bandwidth is broadened about 2 Hz when the spring is introduced under the condition of the suitable magnetic distance. Comparing with the power generation efficiency for three different kinds of structures, it is found that the bistable piezoelectric-electromagnetic harvester has the optimum characteristics, which include the optimal magnetic distance of 15 mm, the optimal load of 8 M Omega, and the parameters variation law of coils. For this structure, the influences of the external excitation and the magnetic distance on the output voltage and dynamic behaviors of the system are examined.
