Development and performance verification of a water-retaining semi-flexible pavement material based on alkali-activated slag system incorporating superabsorbent polymers SCIE

Water-retaining semi-flexible pavement (WRSFP) can effectively mitigate the urban heat island (UHI) effect by reducing the pavement temperature through water evaporation. To reduce environmental impacts and enhance the water retaining capacity and mechanical properties of WRSFP, this paper investigated the effect of proportion of water-retaining grout (WRG) on workability of fresh WRG, compressive strength, flexural strength, and water absorption of hardened WRG based on alkali-activated slag (AAS) system. The optimal proportion of WRG was recommended. The microstructure of the hardened WRG was observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), which allowed for a better characterization and understanding of the degree of hydration and mechanical properties of WRG. The WRSFP specimens (WRSFP-20%, WRSFP-25% and WRSFP-30%) with different porosities of porous asphalt mixture (PAM) were tested for moisture susceptibility, rutting resistance and low-temperature cracking resistance. WRSFP-25% had the best moisture resistance and rutting resistance, and the worst lowtemperature cracking resistance. The maximum difference of upper surface temperature between WRSFP and stone mastic asphalt (SMA), which is commonly used in pavement, was 13.3 degrees C. The time to reach 60 degrees C on the upper surface of WRSFP was 3.4 times longer than that of SMA, which showed an excellent cooling effect of WRSFP.

Effect of Multifactor Coupling Aging on Rheological Properties of Asphalt Binders and Correlations between Various Rheological Indexes SCIE

The asphalt binder is exposed to unfavorable coupling aging of UV radiation, high temperature, and moisture, which accelerates the deterioration of the binder's rheological properties. To investigate the effect of this coupled aging on the rheological properties of asphalt binder, an accelerated environmental aging oven considering ultraviolet (UV) radiation, temperature, and moisture was used in this paper to carry out multifactor coupling aging tests for the binder. The coupling aging test parameters are determined by the central composite design-response surface methodology (CCD-RSM). The rheological properties of asphalt binder before and after aging were examined by dynamic shear rheometer, and the effects of the coupling aging on the viscoelastic, high-temperature, fatigue, and low-temperature properties of the binders were evaluated by employing the complex shear modulus (G*); the aging index (GI), which was established with G*; the rutting factor (G*/sin delta); the Glover-Rowe (G-R) parameter; and the ratio of asphalt binder creep rate to stiffness modulus (m/S), respectively. Further, the effect of the coupling aging on the chemical properties of the asphalt binder was evaluated with carbonyl index obtained from the Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The results showed that the optimal values (temperature: 68.3 degrees C; irradiation intensity: 2,221 W/m2; spraying interval: 250 min) of the coupled aging parameters were determined by the CCD-RSM, and the relationship between the coupled aging time and the carbonyl index was established by the Verhulst model with an R2 value larger than 0.98. As the coupling aging degree increases, the G*, GI, and G*/sin delta show an increasing trend, whereas the G-R parameter, m/S, shows a decreasing trend, indicating that the aging increases the stiffness and high-temperature resistance of the binder and decreases its fatigue properties and low-temperature properties. Based on the correlation analysis, the G-R parameter showed good correlation with the GI, G*/sin delta (45 degrees C, 55 degrees C, and 65 degrees C), m/S (-6 degrees C, -12 degrees C, and -18 degrees C), respectively, and the average R2 value is larger than 0.98. Therefore, the G-R parameter can be used as a comprehensive index for evaluating the rheological properties of binders.

A State-of-the-Art Review on the Functionality of Ultra-Thin Overlays Towards a Future Low Carbon Road Maintenance SCIE

Highway maintenance mileage reached 5.25 million kilometers in China by 2021. Ultra -thin overlay is one of the most commonly used maintenance technologies, which can significantly enhance the economic and environmental benefits of pavements. To promote the low -carbon development of ultrathin overlays, this paper mainly studied the mechanism and influencing factors of several ultra -thin overlay functions. Firstly, the skid resistance, noise reduction, rutting resistance, and crack resistance of ultrathin overlays were evaluated. The results indicated that the high -quality aggregates improved the skid and rutting resistance of ultra -thin overlay by 5%-20%. The optimized gradations and modified binders reduced noise of ultra -thin overlay by 0.4-6.0 dB. The high viscosity modified binders improved the rutting resistance of ultra -thin overlay by about 10%-130%. Basalt fiber improved the cracking resistance of ultra -thin overlay by more than 20%. Due to the thinner thickness and better road performance, the performance -based engineering cost of ultra -thin overlay was reduced by about 30%-40% compared with conventional overlays. Secondly, several environmentally friendly functions of ultra -thin overlay were investigated, including snow melting and deicing, exhaust gas purification and pavement cooling. The lower thickness of ultra -thin overlay was conducive to the diffusion of chloride -based materials to the pavement surface. Therefore, the snow melting effect of self -ice -melting was better. In addition, the ultra -thin overlay mixture containing photocatalytic materials could decompose 20%-50% of the exhaust gas. The colored ultra -thin overlay was able to reduce the temperature of the pavement by up to 8.1 degrees C. The temperature difference between the upper and lower surfaces of the ultra -thin overlay containing thermal resistance materials could reach up to 12.8 degrees C. In addition, numerous typical global engineering applications of functional ultra -thin overlay were summarized. This review can help better understand the functionality of ultra -thin overlays and promote the realization of future multi -functional and lowcarbon road maintenance. (c) 2023 THE AUTHORS. Multiscale evaluation on temperature adjusting performance and road performance of asphalt mixture containing dual phase change materials SCIE

Dual-phase change materials have the potential to improve both rutting resistance and cracking resistance of asphalt pavement, which have been recognized as very difficult to balance for a long time. The aim of this paper was to develop a dual-phase change material which can be used to regulate temperature at high and low temperature,and verify its road properties. Six kinds of composite phase change materials were selected according to the technical requirements of phase change materials, and the latent heat performance, thermal stability and chemical stability of different phase change materials were studied by differential scanning calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy analysis. Then the latent heat performance and temperature regulation performance of the six phase change asphalts were evaluated to analyze the heat absorption and release ability and temperature regulation effect of different composite phase change materials in asphalt;the influence of different phase change materials on the performance of matrix asphalt was compared through the study of viscoelastic properties, high temperature rutting resistance, medium temperature fatigue resistance and low temperature performance and other mechanical properties of different phase change asphalts. Considering the thermal and mechanical properties, 3# and 6# phase change materials were selected as raw materials for the development of dual-phase change temperature modifying materials for road use. The results indicated that the optimal content of 3# and 6# phase change materials is 1.3 %. The addition of dual phase change materials can delay the heating/cooling rate of asphalt mixture by 4.8 %-6.8 % at high temperature and by 6.9 %-10.2 % at low temperature. Compared with ordinary asphalt mixture, the dynamic stability and maximum flexural strain of dual phase change asphalt mixture are increased by 27.8 % and 0.37 % respectively, and the high temperature rutting resistance and low temperature cracking resistance are improved.

Low-temperature cracking is common distress in asphalt pavements. Understanding the change rule of its low-temperature properties is helpful in investigating the optimal maintenance timing of asphalt pavement. In this paper, the change rule of low-temperature properties of asphalt binders with aging time is investigated by various indexes. Four asphalt binders and four anti-aging modified asphalt binders were subjected to the rolling thin film oven (RTFO) test and pressure aging vessel (PAV) test. Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) with the 4 mm parallel plates was used to determine the low-temperature properties of asphalt binders. The results show that aging and low temperature have a negative impact on the low-temperature properties of asphalt binders. The anti-aging agent improves the low-temperature properties and aging resistance of asphalt binders. Compared with other indexes, the critical cracking temperature Tc and the critical temperature difference Delta Tc are more suitable for analysing the effect of aging on the low-temperature properties of asphalt binders. Also, the Delta Tc shows the three-stage decreasing rule of 'fast-slow-fast', with the inflection points. It meant that the low-temperature properties of asphalt binders had been altered at the inflection points, which provided a favourable reference to research on the optimal maintenance timing of asphalt pavement.

Experimental Study on Anti-Aging Effect of Asphalt Binder Liquid Anti-Aging Agent SCIE

During its service life, asphalt pavement is affected by environmental factors such as heat, light, oxygen and moisture. The asphalt binder ages, resulting in a decrease in the performance of the asphalt pavement. Therefore, the development and application of an asphalt anti-aging agent is of great significance. In this paper, the road performance of the developed asphalt binder liquid anti-aging agent was verified in the two scales of asphalt binder and asphalt mixture, respectively. Firstly, a simple aging test method was proposed using needle penetration as the evaluation index. The aging time of the simple aging method was determined to be 20 h. Secondly, the addition of anti-aging agents improved the low-temperature performance of the asphalt binder and had a less adverse effect on the high-temperature performance. The test values of needle penetration and the ductility of the asphalt binder increased and the values of the softening point decreased. And the road performance of the anti-aging asphalt mixture basically met the specification requirements. The addition of the anti-aging agent improved the low-temperature performance of the aged asphalt mixture by 16%, which is of great significance for improving the service life of asphalt pavement.

本发明提供一种沥青路面修复时间的确定方法、装置、终端及存储介质。该方法包括:测量不同老化时间的沥青样品在不同测试温度对应的剪切模量参数;根据所有剪切模量参数,计算沥青样品对应的等效劲度模量;根据所有等效劲度模量,计算所述沥青样品的蠕变速率;根据所有等效劲度模量和所有蠕变速率,计算等效劲度模量和蠕变速率的临界温度差值;根据所述临界温度差值,确定沥青路面修复时间。本发明能够计算得到沥青路面的最佳修复时间,对降低沥青路面的修护成本有重要意义。

The bee structure of an asphalt binder surface changes during the aging and rejuvenation process, and the effect of this microstructural change on the mechanical properties of the asphalt binder is not clear. Therefore, in this paper, a two-dimensional finite element model of an asphalt binder microstructure was constructed based on processed AFM images, and the contents of bee phases and bee casings were varied at the same time to analyze the stress and strain distribution law of the asphalt binder microstructure. The results of the study show that in the bee structure, the stress in the bee phase is obviously greater than that in the bee casing, and the stress in the interstitial phase is the lowest. With the simultaneous enhancement in the proportion of the bee phase and the bee casing, the stresses in the asphalt samples increased in all phase structures. Under the combined effect of the decrease in the content of the bee phase and the increase in the content of the bee casing, there is a certain degree of increase in the internal stresses and strains in the asphalt binder, the effect of the bee casing on the internal stresses in the asphalt binder is more pronounced, and the bee phase and the bee casing play better roles in resisting the external deformation due to the increase in the volume fraction. For a recycled asphalt binder, whether there is an increase in the dosage of the old asphalt binder or an enhancement in the interfacial diffusion and a fusion of new and old asphalt binders, the level of tensile strain within the recycled asphalt binder will increase to a certain extent, which, in turn, will put forward a higher requirement for its anti-cracking ability.

Reversibility of Macroperformance of Virgin Asphalt Binder at Various Aging-Regeneration Stages Based on Rheology SCIE

In order to effectively evaluate the regeneration effects of different rejuvenators on aged asphalt binder, this study carried out a series of tests and evaluations on the macroperformance of virgin asphalt binder at various aging-regeneration stages. A commercial rejuvenator, aromatic oil, and warm mix agent were selected as rejuvenators. Fifteen asphalt binder samples involved various aging methods, including water-ultraviolet aging, water-free ultraviolet aging, rolling thin film oven test (RTFOT), and accelerated aging by pressurized aging vessel (PAV). High-temperature properties of asphalt binders were evaluated by softening point, and low-temperature properties of asphalt binders were evaluated by stiffness modulus and m-value. The viscoelastic properties were evaluated by complex modulus G*. Test results show that the regeneration effects of different rejuvenators were reflected in the reduction of softening point, stiffness modulus, and complex modulus. Based on performance changes of asphalt binder before and after aging, the reversibility indexes Rsp, RG*, RS, and Rm for quantitative evaluation of macroperformance of rejuvenated asphalt binders were proposed. Through linear fitting, it was found that R2 between the reversibility index Rsp and the reversibility index RG* reached 0.7574, and R2 between RS and Rm reached 0.8683. This provided the possibility of mutual transformation between those reversibility indexes. Last, the macroreversibility index of virgin asphalt binder (ARIV) was proposed. The softening point and stiffness modulus were taken as representative indexes to comprehensively evaluate the recovery of high-temperature, low-temperature, and viscoelastic properties of aged asphalt binder by different rejuvenators. This study provided a unified indicator to quantitatively evaluate the regeneration effect of rejuvenator on virgin asphalt binder. It is helpful for better understanding the aging-regeneration process of virgin asphalt binder and determining the optimum regeneration time and rejuvenator.
