A two-level performance-based plastic design method for multi-story steel frames with double-yielding systems SCIE

The performance-based seismic design (PBSD) is usually conducted under design basis earthquakes (DBE), and then, the performance of the designed structures is examined under maximum considered earthquakes (MCE). As a result, it is challenging to simultaneously satisfy the performance targets associated with the DBE and MCE levels. To this end, this study proposes a two-level performance-based plastic design (PBPD) method. The fused steel frames exhibiting trilinear capacity curves are selected as the example structures. The peak interstory drift ratios under the DBE and MCE levels are defined as the performance targets and they are explicitly utilized at the beginning of the design procedure. The expressions of two energy modification factors are first obtained by establishing energy balance equations for single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems under the DBE and MCE levels, respectively. Nonlinear time history analyses (NLTHA) for SDOF systems with various trilinear capacity curves are conducted to derive necessary design parameters. The versatility and flexibility of this design method are achieved by enabling both the primary and secondary yielding systems to yield under the DBE level. To demonstrate and validate the proposed design method, a six-story benchmark steel frame equipped with idealized metallic yielding damping braces is selected and designed with two sets of performance targets. The nonlinear static and NLTHA results proved that the designed structures can simultaneously meet the prescribed performance targets under both DBE and MCE levels.

Experimental tests and numerical simulations of miniature buckling-restrained braces using iron-shape memory alloy bar SCIE

Miniature buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) have a concise configuration and clear working mechanism. Owing to stable and full hysteresis, miniature BRBs are emerging as favorable energy-dissipating fuse elements in seismic applications. This paper proposes using iron-shape memory alloy (FeSMA) in lieu of conventional steel as the yielding core and focuses on the cyclic behavior. Four specimens, corresponding to four loading protocols, were fabricated and tested. According to experimental data, the miniature FeSMA BRBs exhibited full hysteresis, which is characterized by large damping, noticeable isotropic and kinematic hardening behavior and appreciable post-yield stiffness ratio. The cumulative plastic deformations meet the requirement by ANSI/AISC 341-16. Further, high fidelity finite element models, which explicitly considered damage and fracture rules, were established for numerical simulations. Good agreement can be found between the experimental data and numerical simulations, in terms of failure modes, fracture locations and global hysteresis.

Earthquake-induced damage often is caused by large deformation and floor acceleration. To ensure a fast function recovery process, controlling postevent permanent deformation also is very critical. Combining the merits of different lateral force-resisting systems is a promising solution to control these engineering demand parameters simultaneously. Therefore, this study investigated a resilient steel frame with multiple lateral force-resisting systems and developed the corresponding seismic design method. Specifically, the proposed steel frame consists of buckling-restrained braces, viscous damping braces, and a moment-resisting frame, which mainly control peak interstory drift ratio (theta p), peak floor acceleration (Ap), and residual interstory drift ratio (theta r), respectively. Based on the equivalent single-degree-of-freedom systems, nonlinear time-history analyses were conducted to obtain various constant-ductility response spectra. These response spectra were incorporated into the proposed design method which jointly defines theta p, Ap, and theta r as the performance objectives. A six-story benchmark steel frame was selected for demonstrating the seismic performance of the frame and validating the design method. Because theta r is a critical metric for evaluating seismic resilience, three levels of theta r were used in the design examples. The seismic analysis results indicated that the designed structures can well satisfy the preselected performance objectives.

To promote the seismic resilience of structures, minimizing both seismic damage and repair time is an effective way. Toward this goal, this paper proposes a novel resilient steel frame (RSF). The kernel structural components are the self -centering (SC) rocking columns and the replaceable energy -dissipating (ED) connections. The SC rocking columns equipped with shape memory alloy slip friction dampers (SMASFDs) reduce residual deformation and plastic damage of column bases, whereas the ED connections using shaped fuse steel plates mainly dissipate the input seismic energy. To demonstrate the seismic response characteristics, the numerical model of a three-story RSF is developed in OpenSees. The model is firstly validated by experimental results and then its seismic performance evaluations are carried out using three suites of earthquake ground motions associated with three seismic hazard levels. An equivalent conventional steel frame (CSF) with ED connections and rigid column bases is introduced as the counterpart. Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) is conducted to obtain samples of the demand. Based on the IDA data, the joint fragility curves are generated using the joint probability density functions, taking into account the coupling relationship between the maximum and residual drift. The analysis results show that the RSF exhibits comparable maximum interstory drift and lower residual interstory drift, compared with the CSF. The introduction of the SC rocking column effectively protects the column from yielding and mitigates the residual deformation of the replaceable ED connections, therefore improving the reparability and seismic resilience of the structural system.

Comparative seismic analysis of frames with shape memory alloy slip friction dampers SCIE

This study investigated the seismic performance of 6-, 9-, and 12-story concentrically braced steel frames utilizing shape memory alloy slip friction dampers (SMASFDFs). For comparison purposes, identical frames equipped with self-centering braces (SCBFs) and buckling-restrained braces (BRBFs) were also designed and analyzed. The seismic performance of considered frames was evaluated through nonlinear static and nonlinear time history analysis (NLTHA) under three seismic hazard levels, i.e., frequently occurred earthquakes (FOE), design basis earthquakes (DBE), and maximum considered earthquakes (MCE). Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) was conducted to examine the seismic responses, including peak interstory drift ratios (PID), peak floor accelerations (PFA), and residual interstory drift ratios (RID), of the designed frames under varying levels of seismic intensity. Fragility curves considering single and multiple seismic responses were obtained based on the IDA results. The results show that the SMASFDFs have comparable deformation control capacity as the BRBFs while exhibiting zero RID and more uniform deformation distribution over the building height. Moreover, in most circumstances, the joint failure probability is lowest for the SMASFDFs when considering multiple seismic responses. From a seismic design perspective, current results suggest that the SMASFDFs can be designed with the same strength reduction factor (R) if the PID is especially concerned.

本发明公开了一种双阶屈服金属弯曲阻尼器,包括上层钢板、下层钢板、带滑槽连接板、X型钢板、三角形钢板、滑动轴、连接螺钉、螺钉垫片。多块三角形钢板顶部置入上层钢板开槽当中,并与上层钢板焊接连接;三角形钢板下部预先开槽,并置入滑动轴,滑动轴两侧分别置入两块连接板中,两块连接板焊接在下层钢板上;在小震作用下阻尼器上下相对位移小,外侧两块X型钢板首先受弯进入屈服状态耗能,而中间三角形钢板在小震作用下处于弹性状态,未进入屈服阶段;在阻尼器受到大震作用时,上下两层钢板相对位移增大,三角形钢板也进入受弯屈服状态,两种钢板共同耗能。通过控制两种钢板的相关参数,本发明可起到在大震小震分别作用下分阶耗能的效果。

本发明公开了一种基于SMA的自复位墙式阻尼器,该阻尼器与仅通过摩擦耗能或SMA耗能的阻尼器相比耗能能力更强,同时该阻尼器具有自复位性能,可有效减小结构残余变形。本发明的T形内板和两侧L形外板通过SMA螺栓连接固定,T形内板和L外板上均加工有可贴合的坡面,当T形内板与L形外板发生水平方向相对移动时,两侧L形外板向外移动,SMA螺栓受拉伸长。SMA螺栓的轴力引起坡面之间的法向接触力,进而产生摩擦力。该阻尼器的耗能能力由两部分组成,即坡面之间的摩擦耗能和SMA螺栓的滞回耗能。SMA螺栓的超弹性实现阻尼器的自复位性能。

本发明公开了一种装配式金属弯曲屈服阻尼器,包括:X型钢板、钢垫块、连接螺母和连接螺杆四部分。钢垫块与X型钢板交替布置,二者通过预紧的螺杆装配成整体钢垫块开竖向螺栓孔,以便阻尼器与结构栓接。该阻尼器在水平向地震作用下,上下两端产生相对位移,X型钢板发生弯曲变形,为结构提供刚度和阻尼。与常见的金属弯曲阻尼器相比,本发明无需焊接工艺,避免了焊接过程产生的残余应力、工艺差异和焊接部位易发生断裂等不利因素,因而提高了阻尼器力学性能的稳定性;并且,若震后需更换X型钢板,本发明中采用的装配式连接方式可有效地提高更换效率。

本发明公开了一种基于SMA滑动摩擦阻尼器的自复位摇摆柱,该摇摆柱由H型钢柱和SMA滑动摩擦阻尼器组成,柱与底板无焊接,遭遇水平地震动时,柱底接触面张开实现摇摆机制,上连接件带动两侧SMA滑动摩擦阻尼器发生变形。摇摆柱通过剪力板保证柱脚的抗剪能力,通过柱两侧的SMA滑动摩擦阻尼器实现消能和自复位,变形集中于SMA螺栓削弱段,其主要部件均保持弹性,避免产生塑性破坏。本发明柱底与底板无焊接,当受到地震水平荷载时,摇摆柱以柱翼缘为转动中心发生摇摆,柱底张开产转角,上连接件带动两侧SMA滑动摩擦阻尼器发生变形,SMA螺栓受拉伸长,SMA螺栓的超弹性能有效消除摇摆柱的残余变形,使其具有自复位的优点。

本发明公开了一种具有内凹槽型的新型防屈曲装置,该防屈曲装置截面不拘泥为圆形、方形。本发明包括构件、内凹槽型钢套、垫圈和螺栓,无论狗骨型、竹节型等多种构件,通过削弱段中心处凸起,内凹槽型钢套包裹并卡住构件后用螺栓连接,形成防屈曲钢套;试验中,试验机器直接与构件连接,这种新型防屈曲装置仅提供侧向约束,为构件提供合适刚度,有效防止构件发生屈曲,降低屈曲破坏风险,减少构件拉压试验误差;该防屈曲钢套全螺栓装配而成,便于安装和拆卸,为探究不同构件的拉压滞回行为提供一种新型装配式防屈曲装置。工程中,仅需更换构件,可观察震后构件的损伤,该防屈曲装置可重复使用。
