摘要 :

Generally, the cohesive healing within the asphalt composites and the adhesive healing from the asphalt-aggregate interface always occur simultaneously in the asphalt concrete with growing damage. This study aims to investigate the cohesive and adhesive healing behaviors of asphalt binder respectively by utilizing the newly developed linear amplitude sweep based healing (LASH) and binder bond strength based healing (BBSH) tests. Seven unmodified asphalt binders and one styrene–butadienestyrene (SBS) polymer modified binder are selected in this study. A fracture mechanics based crack growth approach is proposed to define the cohesive healing recovery in the LASH test with two percent healing parameters, in terms of the %Ha of the crack length recovery and the %HA of the sample intact area recovery. In pre-failure conditions, the measured %Ha can at least reach beyond 30% while the %HA is normally within 30% for tested binders. Meanwhile, the %Ha results show more consistent trends to the traditional simplified-viscoelastic continuum damage (S-VECD) based LASH data interpretation. Furthermore, the cohesive failure occurrence is verified to significantly impact the healing performance comparison. The cohesive healing behaviors of neat and SBS binders respectively in pre-failure and post-failure conditions are distinguished to each other, which are validated either from S-VECD or crack growth approaches. Regarding to the binder adhesive healing behavior, it is observed that the presence of water and the using of granite substrate generally have positive effects on adhesive healing recovery in the BBSH tests. The SBS modification generally displays lower adhesive healing percentages than the neat binders especially in the wet conditions. Though no clear relationships can be found between the cohesive and adhesive healing behaviors in this study, it is recommended to quantify the binder contribution to the adhesive healing process in the future work. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

摘要 :

This paper investigates the damage-healing properties of unmodified and polymer modified asphalt binders under different aging levels using newly developed linear amplitude sweep based healing (LASH) test. One neat asphalt 70# and one Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) modified asphalt are selected in this study. The original binders are subjected to the Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) and Pressurized Aging Vessel (PAV) tests for stimulating the short- and long-term aging of asphalt binders during the pavement construction and service phases. Through the LASH tests under different aging levels of the two binders, it is found that the damage-healing performance of both neat and modified asphalt binders gradually decrease with the increasing aging levels. It is also observed that the healing performance of 70# neat asphalt is higher than that of SBS binder in pre-failure conditions, however, the healing behaviors of SBS binder is becoming obviously better than that of 70# binder after fatigue failure. Furthermore, a promising relationship is found between the macroscale healing properties of asphalt binders and their microscale chemical composition under various aging levels. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

摘要 :

Currently the linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test is one of the main fatigue protocols to estimate the fatigue resistance of asphalt binder. In past 10-years, several data interpretation approaches have been developed for the LAS-based binder fatigue modeling. The objective of this paper is to compare the currently available analytical approaches for the data interpretation of LAS test and further investigate the potential links between the different LAS-based fatigue evaluations of asphalt binders. Totally 20 types of unmodified and modified asphalt binders are selected in this study, which actually cover 35 sample conditions under different aging and temperature levels. Experimental and analysis results indicate that the full fatigue performance of asphalt binder can be characterized from with the S-VECD & G(R) approach. The failure property in LAS test is also well correlated to the binder fatigue life simulation and thus can be utilized to more efficiently distinguish the binder fatigue resistance. Furthermore, the performance predictive accuracy of AASHTO TP101 specification method is strongly dependent on the selected failure definition. Taking the artificial failure definition of 35% reduction in |G*|.sin delta largely underestimates the binder fatigue life when compared to the S-VECD & G(R) approach. However, when a material-dependent failure definition of peak stress is alternatively employed in specification method, the correlation of the predictive binder fatigue life between the two analytical approaches is significantly improved and a linear relationship is additionally found between the S-VECD & G(R) approach and specification method. Therefore, it is recommended that when only the standard LAS test with one loading rate is available in practice, the peak stress failure definition should be used in AASHTO TP101 specification method to provide relatively accurate fatigue performance estimation of asphalt binder.

摘要 :

The linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test has been widely accepted for estimating the fatigue resistance of asphalt binders in the last 10 years. This paper proposes a fracture mechanics-based analytical approach for crack initiation and propagation characterization in the LAS test, aiming to more precisely explore the binder crack growth and failure mechanism. Seven unmodified neat asphalt binders and one styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer-modified binder are selected in this study. The crack length (a), rate of cracking (da/dN), stress intensity factor (K), and energy release rate (G) are the fundamental parameters for the data interpretation approach proposed in this paper. Experimental and analysis results demonstrate that the energy-based failure definition (either from continuum damage mechanics or fracture mechanics) should be utilized to detect the material-dependent failure occurrence in LAS test. The fracture behavior of asphalt binder in the LAS test follows the two-phase crack growth (TPCG) model in terms of the crack initiation and crack propagation. The crack propagation phase further consists of stable crack growth and unstable crack growth. It is found that the fatigue performance of asphalt binder is intrinsically governed and dominated by its resistance to the crack propagation. The SBS binder in this study clearly displays slower crack propagation behavior than other neat binders. Additionally, the traditional fatigue life can also be divided into the crack initiation life and crack propagation life, which is promising to clarify the specific modification contribution to binder fatigue resistance. The two critical crack lengths of initiated crack and propagated crack for a given asphalt binder are found to be correlated to each other, indicating the potential links between the binder crack initiation and propagation behaviors. 摘要 :

Asphalt binders modified with bio-oils derived from various biomasses have been developed for addressing pavement sustainability and environmental concerns. This study evaluated the bio-binders modified with bio-oils derived from waste cooking oil, and was aimed for the chemical and rheological characterization under different oxidative aging conditions and the aging susceptibility of the bio-binders. The chemical analysis was based on saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes (SARA) fractionation, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The rheological characterization consisted of multiple stress creep recovery, linear amplitude sweep, and elastic recovery tests. The results indicated that aging caused shift from the light components to the asphaltenes or heavy molecules. The bio-oil modification balanced the effect of aging by producing relatively well-dispersed asphalt systems in comparison to the petroleum control. According to the SARA and GPC analyses, the petroleum asphalt was less susceptible to aging. The TGA results suggested that once aged the bio-binders were less stable under high temperatures presumably due to thermal degradation of the bio-oil molecules. The addition of bio-oil lowered the rutting resistance and marginally reduced the elastic recovery potential; according to the corresponding evaluation parameters, the aging resistance of the bio-binders was similar or slightly lower as compared to the control. The bio-oil modification improved the fatigue cracking performance and also reduced the aging susceptibility within the context of fatigue resistance. The correlation between the chemical and rheological properties of the bio-binders were in line with the implications based on the colloidal model for petroleum asphalts.

摘要 :

The physico-chemo-rheological properties of asphalt binder are critical for the long-term performance of asphalt pavement infrastructures. The objectives of this study are to characterize the physico-rheological properties of unmodified neat and polymer-modified asphalt binders with newly developed rheological performance tests, and further investigate the binder chemical properties as well as the possible performance relationship from macroscale to microscale perspective. Three neat asphalt binders and two styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt binders are selected in this study. The physical properties of asphalt binder include traditional penetration, softening point and ductility. The saturates, aromatics, resins and asphaltenes (SARA) fractionation test, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests are respectively conducted to quantify the chemical composition, molecular weight distribution and structure properties of asphalt binders. The rheological rutting and fatigue resistance are evaluated through the multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR), linear amplitude sweep (LAS) and DSR-based elastic recovery (DSR-ER) tests. Experimental results indicate that the physical properties are only effective to distinguish the rheological performance of neat asphalt binders. The lower aromatics contents improve the binder rutting resistance and an unified relationship between aromatic contents and binder rutting performance is obtained for both neat and modified binders. In addition, increasing the amount of small asphalt molecules decrease the resistance to permanent deformation respectively for neat and modified binders. However, the small asphalt molecule is favorable for improving the binder fatigue performance. The large molecular size (LMS) parameter from GPC test is demonstrated a unified correlation to the fatigue life of both neat and modified binders. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

摘要 :

Conventional asphalt binder derived from the petroleum refining process is widely used in pavement engineering. However, asphalt binder is a non-renewable material, while waste cooking oil (WCO) is a renewable original material, so it can be used as an additive for asphalt binder. Several studies found that the WCO changes mechanical properties of asphalt binder. However, the micro investigation of the modification of WCO is not studied. In this paper, A reasonable molecular structure for WCO is created based on previous research findings firstly, which are fundamental and crucial for establishing the molecular model of bio-asphalt binder with various WCO contents. Then the molecular dynamics technology is employed to investigate the mechanical properties of asphalt binder with different WCO contents. The results show that the WCO softens the asphalt binder increasing with its content, which is consistent with the previous research, indicating that the simulated results characterize the mechanical properties of asphalt binder effectively and scientifically.

摘要 :

The objective of this article is to investigate the effects of temperature on rutting and fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt binders based on the time-temperature superposition principle (TTSP). In this study, the TTSP approach was employed to interpret the results of multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) and linear amplitude sweep (LAS) tests for both neat and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)-modified asphalt binders. The higher stress level of 3.2 kPa in the standard MSCR test procedure was extended to 10 and 15 kPa to verify the stress sensitivity of the nonrecoverable compliance (J(nr)). A loading duration of 5 minutes in the standard LAS test was extended to 10 and 15 minutes to develop the fatigue failure criterion at different conditions. The results demonstrate that the time-strain curves of the neat binder during the MSCR tests under different temperatures can be unified into a single strain master curve using the TTSP shift factors, based on which the predictive J, showed good agreement with the measured values. This TTSP-based analysis approach does not work well for the MSCR results of the SBS-modified binder at high temperatures. However, the fatigue failure criterion determined from the LAS tests under different temperatures was verified to be successfully constructed into a single failure criterion according to the TTSP approach for both the neat and SBS-modified binders. Therefore, only an additional caution is raised for the TTS-based analysis on rutting resistance of the modified binder in a high temperature range.

摘要 :

This study assessed the fatigue performance of asphalt binders modified with crumb rubber, waste cooking oil (WCO), and Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS). The experimental program included linear amplitude sweep (LAS) and time sweep (TS) tests with different loading profiles under various test temperatures. The objective was to compare the fatigue analyses based on the recently proposed G(R) and W-sum(R) failure criteria within the viscoelastic continuum damage (VECD) modeling framework. Simulation algorithms were developed for the two criteria which allowed for fatigue performance evaluation. The results indicated that the damage characteristic relationship was slightly dependent on test method and strain profile, and the degree of dependence was material specific. The two failure criteria appeared to be fundamental material functions; the G(R) criterion was temperature dependent but was able to unify both LAS and TS tests, while the W-sum(R) criterion unified both test methods under all temperatures. With respect to modification, an optimum WCO dosage of 3% was identified according to the W-sum(R) criterion for the best fatigue performance. Both the SBS and crumb rubber modifications were observed to significantly improve the fatigue resistance based on the two failure criteria.

摘要 :

In order to be used as paving asphalts, bio-oil modified asphalt binders (biobinders) should provide adequate functionality over a wide temperature spectrum in resisting permanent deformation and fatigue cracking. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the rheological behavior and performance of biobinders under intermediate and high temperatures, and to assess the effects of bio-oil modification under a variety of oxidative aging conditions for aging susceptibility of the biobinders. The rheological and performance characterization was based on frequency sweep, linear amplitude sweep, elastic recovery, and multiple stress creep recovery tests. Experimental results indicated that an increase in the bio-oil percentage provided improved fatigue cracking performance but reduced rutting resistance and elastic recovery potential at all aging levels. Oxidative aging produced the reversed effects for both the control and biobinders. Use of bio-oil appeared to abate the aging susceptibility in terms of fatigue cracking resistance, but also rendered the asphalt binders less resistant to aging with regard to elastic recovery potential. The aging susceptibility of the petroleum asphalt and biobinders were similar concerning the rutting resistance. The correlations among the obtained performance parameters verified that the fatigue cracking resistance, rutting resistance, and elastic recovery property of the biobinders at all aging levels were generally in line with those of the petroleum asphalt, and that the biobinders could be potentially utilized as sustainable paving asphalts.
