A new flux prediction model for laminar and turbulent flow regimes in constant pressure cross-flow microfiltration SCIE

Cross-flow filtration mode can greatly alleviate the membrane fouling due to the presence of shear stress. In this paper, a new flux prediction model for steady cross-flow microfiltration has been established by considering the effect of shear stress as function of the geometry of filtration module and the suspension properties in the particle mass balance. The results showed that this model possessed higher accuracy in both laminar and turbulent flow regime (relative error sigma = 4.43%/1.91%) than Glen Bolton's model (sigma = 11.88%/6.42%) and Makardij's model (sigma = 9.44%/12.92%). Meanwhile, the validity of the proposed model was approved by using other suspensions (yeast suspension and activated sludge suspension) (sigma < 3.43%) and other membranes (PVDF and PES microfiltration membrane) (sigma < 4.63%). Moreover, new criterion relationships between Sherwood number (Sh), Reynolds number (Re) and Schmidt number (Sc) in both laminar and turbulent flow regime were also established.

A new model based on the removal mechanism of loose/compact cake and the re-deposition mechanism of foulants was proposed to predict the instantaneous fouling resistance (Rf(t)) in the rinsing process of 0.1 mu m PAN membrane fouled with activated sludge. The variation trend of Rf(t) was also analyzed by the removal rate of loose/compact cake (rr-ose/rr-compact) and the re-deposition rate of foulants (rre-deposition). Moreover, the model was validated by using other foulants (yeast, actual activated sludge, HA and SA) and membranes (0.1 mu m PES and PVDF membranes). The results showed that the model predictions had good agreements with experimental data at different cross-flow velocities (1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 m/s) or temperatures (25, 30, 35 and 40 degrees C) (R2 0.9900). Besides, the variation trend of Rf(t) could be divided into three stages: (i) Rf(t) quickly decreased and the removal of loose cake was almost completed at rinsing time of t1 (first transition point) (rrose = 0); (ii) Rf(t) slowly decreased and Rf(t) reached to minimum (rr-compact = rre-deposition) at t2 (second transition point); (iii) Rf(t) slightly increased after t2 (rr-compact(t)<rre-deposition(t)). This model would provide an accurate method to analyze the variation trend of Rf(t) in the rinsing process and a theoretical basis for the optimization of rinsing conditions.

Electroactive species modified electrodes are extensively studied as the mediator donor in homogeneous electrocatalytic reaction for electrochemical sensing purpose. In this paper, homogeneous electrocatalytic reaction within a thin layer modified electrode is investigated theoretically and experimentally to illustrate the electroactive species distribution on ferrocenedicarboxylic acid modified carbon black paste electrodes (FDACBPE). The voltammetric analysis of the fabricated FDACBPE reveals that the electrode is in diffusional control at the scan rate lower than 50 mV s-1 while a surface control electrode reaction is observed at a higher scan rate. Based on the experimental results, three finite element models including thin layer model, fixed mediator model and combined model are established to evaluate the homogeneous electrocatalytic reaction with FDACBPE. The numerical results show that the anodic peak gap order of 3 models is as follows: fixed mediator model > combined model > thin layer model. As validation of the proposed model, the comparison between experimental results and numerical data on both polished and unpolished FDACBPE indicates that the combined model data are more suitable for the description of experimental voltammograms compared with the other two models. Also, the comparison between these models suggests that both surface confined and diffusional FDA exist when FDACBPE is employed.

Photocatalysis and membrane technology in a single unit is an ideal strategy for the development of wastewater treatment systems. In this work, novel GO (x wt%)/TiO2-CA hybrid membranes have been synthesized via a facile non-solvent induced phase inversion technique. The strategy aimed to address the following dilemmas: (1) Effective utilization of visible light and minimize e(-)/h(+) recombination; (2) Enhanced separation capability and superior anti-fouling and self-cleaning ability. The experimental results reveal that the integration of nano-composite (GO/TiO2) boosts the membrane properties when compared to pristine CA and single photocatalyst employed membrane (GO-CA and TiO2-CA). The effect of GO content on the properties of the photocatalytic membrane has been determined by utilizing three different ratios of GO, viz. 0.5 wt%, 1 wt%, and 2 wt% designated as NC(1)-CA, NC(2)-CA, and NC(3)-CA, respectively. Amongst them, NC(3)-CA membrane showed state-of-the-art performance with an elevated photocatalytic response (four times higher than pristine CA membrane) toward methyl orange. Moreover, the water flux of NC(3)-CA membrane is 613 L/m(2)h, approximately three times higher than bare CA membrane (297 L/m(2)h), while keeping the MO rejection high (96.6%). Besides, fouling experiments presented the lowest total and fouling resistance ratios and a higher flux recovery ratio (91.78%) for the NC(3)-CA membrane, which endows the membrane with higher anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties. Thus, NC(3)-CA membrane outperforms the other as synthesized membranes in terms of separation efficiency, visible light photo-degradation of pollutant, anti-fouling and self-cleaning ability. Therefore, NC(3)-CA membrane is considered as the next generation membrane for exhibiting great potential for the wastewater treatment applications.

Comparison of fouling behaviors between activated sludge suspension in MBR and EPS model solutions: A new combined model SCIE

How to precisely describe the fouling behavior of activated sludge suspension in constant flux cross-flow filtration is a challenge. In this paper, a three-mechanism (standard pore blocking, complete pore blocking and cake filtration) model was established based on the classic blocking law to describe the fouling behavior of activated sludge suspension in the constant flux cross-flow filtration. The results showed that the predictions of the proposed model showed good agreements with experimental data not only for activated sludge suspension (R-2 >= 0.994), but also for bovine serum albumin protein (BSA) (R-2 >= 0.966), humic acid (HA) (R-2 >= 0.940), sodium alginate (SA) (R-2 >= 0.801) and kaolin (R-2 >= 0.961). Meanwhile, for activated sludge suspension, the variation rate of the cake resistance increased with the filtration flux, and the steady available membrane area ratio (A(steady)/A(0)) was independent on the filtration flux while it decreased with the increase of MLSS concentration. In addition, the available membrane area ratio (A(t)/A(0)) decreased slower for activated sludge suspension than that for single model solution (BSA, HA and SA) in the fouling process.

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) in activated sludge suspensions are the key substances leading to the membrane fouling. In order to understand the effect of EPSs on the membrane fouling, the actual EPSs solution extracted from activated sludge suspensions was used as the feed solution to conduct dead-end microfiltration experiment under different pressures by using different membranes. The flux (J), fouling resistances (R-m, R-p, R-c and R-total) and the available membrane area (A/A(0)) were used to describe the membrane fouling. The results showed that with the increase of pressure, J and R(total )increased. R-p firstly increased and then kept constant, R-c always increased and became the dominant resistance. A/A(0) decreased from 1 to a constant. R-c plays a key role on R-total for different membranes under the same pressure. The sequence of the steady available membrane area (A(steady)/A(0)) for different pressures was: 63.0% (0.05MPa)> 56.5% (0.08MPa)> 53.6% (0.10MPa), and that for different membranes was: 80.1% (0.2 mu m PES) > 79.9% (0.1 mu m PES) > 78.4% (0.1 mu m PAN) > 53.6% (0.1 mu m PVDF).

Studying the effect of different operation conditions (bovine serum albumin (BSA) concentration, flux and stirring speed) on the membrane fouling behaviors (the variation of transmembrane pressure (TMP), cake resistance (Re), pore blocking resistance (R-i) and available membrane area ratio (A/A(0))) is of paramount importance in the membrane bioreactor (MBR) process. The constant flux filtration experiment was conducted to investigate the fouling behaviors of BSA solution, which provides a guidance for controlling the membrane fouling. The intermediate blocking-cake combined model was established and it was described mathematically with good results. The results showed that the influence sequence of operating conditions on the TMP was obtained as flux > concentration > stirring speed. Meanwhile, Re decreased with the increase of stirring speed, and the A/A(0) decreased with the increase of BSA concentration and the flux.

In order to find a model solution to simulate actual extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) solution in terms of filterability behavior, a series of experiments were conducted in a dead-end unstirred cell with 0.1 mu m polyvinylidene fluoride membranes using single/ binary mixtures consisting of sodium alginate (SA), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and humic acid (HA). It can obtain that the presence of BSA and SA is a necessary condition for model the filtration behavior of the actual EPS solution. Meanwhile, compared the actual EPS solution with binary mixtures model EPS solution can find that BSA/SA=140/58.3 and SA/HA=107/28.5 can exhibit the similar filtration behavior as actual EPS, while BSA/HA are far from that of actual EPS solution. The suitable type and combination of simulated solution were determined to improve the consistency with EPS solution in actual MBR system.

Rinsing Condition Optimization of the Membrane Fouled by Yeast Suspension CPCI-S

In order to sufficiently study the effects of stirring speed and temperature on the membrane flux, the flux recovery rate (FRR) and model parameters (k(1), k(2), k(3) and R-i) of the PAN membrane (200kDa) fouled by yeast suspension, a series of rinsing experiments were carried out. Meanwhile, the instantaneous membrane flux was predicted by the rinsing model and corresponding regression equation of model parameters was obtained. The result indicated that the model shows a good agreement (R-2>0.9700) and the temperature has a more significant effect on FRR and model parameters (k(1), k(2), k(3) and R-i). FRR increased from 58.40% to 99.41% when the temperature increase from 25 degrees C to 55 degrees C (the rate constant of dissolution increased from 0.00371 m(-1) to 0.00531 m(-1)) while it only increased from 55.67% to 67.50% when the stirring speed increases from 200 rpm to 800 rpm (the rate constant of dissolution increased from 0.00366 m(-1) to 0.00456 m(-1)). In addition, the rinsing condition can be optimized by the combination of the prediction model of flux (equation (1)) and the regression equation (equation (2)) to obtain the optimal cleaning condition.

This study systematically investigated the fouling behavior and mechanism of PAN Microfiltration (MF) membrane fouled with the model binary mixture (bovine serum albumin (BSA) and sodium alginate (SA)) of extracellular polymer substance (EPS) solution under different concentration and transmembrane pressure (TMP). The result showed that the fouling mechanism of the model binary mixture was the pore blocking and cake formation. Moreover, the SA plays a dominant role in the model binary mixture (BSA/SA). The higher SA concentration could cause the more serious membrane fouling (both the flux (J) and the available membrane area (A/A(0)) decreased), and the total resistance increased and caused the fouling mechanism changing from combined complete blocking and cake filtration into individual cake filtration appeared earlier. In addition, increasing of the TMP can also aggravate membrane fouling and it could be accurately described by the cake-complete model. This studied offered insight into the model binary mixture in the fouling behavior and mechanism, which can be used as guidance for practical application.
