Time difference mapping method for acoustic emission source location of composite plates EI CSCD

An improved time difference mapping method is proposed to locate the acoustic emission (AE) source of composite plate in order to solve the problems of fiber fracture, the matrix crack defects within composite plate and the acoustic velocity in different propagation direction is inconsistent and difference. This method use the prebuilt database method, avoiding consider the propagation speed of waves in the plate are not consistent and the wave propagation modes, and layout of the sensor in experiments is not strictly required. Firstly, in order to quickly and accurately select and delete the pseudo AE events from a large number of AE data, the clustering algorithm is used to automatically identify and select the highly correlated AE events on each grid node and construct a time difference training database. Secondly, interpolation compensation algorithm is adopted to increase grid density and improve grid resolution. Finally, the location of the source is verified by using the weighted difference algorithm to verify the location of the actual source in the test area. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the average actual errors of the location of the sound source is reduced from 26.5 mm (using the traditional time difference mapping method) to 18.0 mm (using the improved time difference mapping method), the corresponding average relative error is reduced from 5.3% to 3.6%, and the overall running time is reduced from 5 h to 16.87 s. The research shows that the improved time difference mapping method can effectively improve the location results and precision of the sound source. © 2020 Acta Acustica.

Parametric signal representation techniques with Chirplet models have attracted much attention in ultrasonic guided waves-based research of material property identification and structural integrity evaluation. The known Chirplet models are established using either the Gaussian windows or the linear chirp function. This is inconsistent with practical situations where the excitation is a Hanning-windowed sinusoidal signal, and the received signals have a nonlinear phase and asymmetric envelope due to the dispersive nature of the waves. A nonlinear Hanning-windowed Chirplet (NHWC) model was proposed to eliminate the above inconsistencies in which a nonlinear phase modulation term was designed to modulate the classical Hanning-window and the sine function. The phase modulation term was established with the hyperbolic tangent function. The mathematical properties of the nonlinear phase modulation term and the NHWC model were analyzed mathematically, including the time variability, parity, concavity, and convexity of the phase. These were used to guide the parameter setting in parametric signal representation techniques. The NHWC model can characterize various characteristics of guided waves signals, including the symmetric or asymmetric Hanning envelopes and the phase nonlinearity. Finally, an adaptive genetic algorithm was adopted to verify the effectiveness of the NHWC model in the parameter representation of experimentally measured ultrasonic signals.

The Dynamic Magnetostriction (DM) measurement method as a nondestructive testing method of ferromagnetic materials, measures the DM curve using electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) to characterize material and predict the mechanical properties. Lorentz forces and magnetostriction forces contribute mainly to the ultrasonic generation. Only the range of low field, in which the magnetostriction force mechanism is predominant can be used to measure the DM curve, but the boundaries of this range are uncertain. The improved DM measurement method based on shear wave Magnetostriction EMAT (M-EMAT) is proposed and the theory of generation of shear waves is derived. For the M-EMAT, only magnetostriction force mechanism contributed to the generation of shear waves. A theoretical model for the optimization of the transducer is developed, the model is in good agreement with the experimental results. The microstructure changes caused by residual strain will affect the magnetostriction coefficient and the DM curve. Therefore, the DM curves of low carbon steel specimens with different levels of residual strains are measured by the optimized transducer to characterize the residual strain. The normalized results demonstrate that the slope of the DM curve obviously changes with the residual strain. This leads to the conclusion that the DM measurement method can be used to characterize the residual strain of the low carbon steels.

Acoustic emission (AE) source localization is a powerful detection method. Time Difference Mapping (TDM) method is an effective method for detecting defects in complex structures. The core of this method is to search for a point with the minimum distance away from the verification point in the time difference database. In Traditional Time Difference Mapping (T-TDM) method and Improved Time Difference Mapping (I-TDM) method, the larger database and denser grids allow the higher localization accuracy. If the location points are not included in the database, the localization accuracy of the T-TDM and I-TDM methods will be greatly affected. To solve the above problems, a new AE source localization method, Generalized Regression Neural Network Based on Time Difference Mapping (GRNN-TDM), is proposed to improve the localization accuracy in the study. In the proposed method, the time difference data of the sensor path on all nodes in the time difference mapping are used as the training input data and the coordinates of grid nodes are used as the training output data. After continuous learning and training, the neural network model predicts its possible source location with the time difference data collected from the verification point. In this paper, the localization of AE sources with T-TDM, I-TDM and GRNN-TDM methods was studied in four composite plates with different fiber layers and an aluminum plate with holes. The localization results showed that the localization accuracy of the GRNN-TDM method was higher than that of T-TDM and I-TDM methods.

Ultrasonic guided waves have the ability of long-distance nondestructive testing for defects in waveguide structures, and have been one of the hotspots in the field of nondestructive testing for many years. Finite element method (FEM) has the ability to calculate various complex dynamics problems and has become an important tool in the research of ultrasonic guided wave testing technique. Considering the hot issues in the research, a brief review of the relevant FEM is proposed. The development of FEM and its application in the excitation and reception of guided waves under multi-physical coupled field mechanism, the propagation characteristics of guided waves in linear elasticity and viscoelastic structures and nonlinear ultrasonic guided waves are introduced. Finally, the research emphasis and development direction of the relevant FEM in the future is prospected based on the research trend of ultrasonic guided wave testing technique. © 2020 Advances in Mechanics.

To improve the efficiency and robustness of electromagnetic ultrasonic testing, magneto-acoustic compound inspection for ferromagnetic materials is proposed. Both ultrasonic waves and pulsed eddy current (PEC) could be obtained by the single detection of an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT), where ultrasonic waves were generated based on the coupling of the magnetostriction effect and the Lorentz force mechanism, when the EMAT was used to detect ferromagnetic materials. In this study, three simulation models of the EMAT were built by coupling different physics fields while keeping the geometry of the models unchanged and the other parameters of the EMAT constant. Transverse wave could be generated by magnetostriction force, and longitudinal wave could be generated by Lorentz force. Based on time-frequency analysis of the simulation results, the energies of ultrasonic waves and PEC were concentrated in different frequency ranges. Through the filtering strategy and by separating the time-domain signal, magnetostriction force ultrasonic wave (MFUW), Lorentz force ultrasonic wave (LFUW), and PEC could be decoupled from the EMAT testing signal. Multiple parameters can be extracted by a single detection of the EMAT, and the ability of the electromagnetic ultrasonic testing can be improved.

Permanent magnet is widely used as one of the three elements of electromagnetic acoustic transducer (magnet, coil, tested specimen). However, due to the immutability and non-uniformity of the permanent magnet magnetic field, the electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) will produce other unwanted modes, which will affect the purity of the targeted mode in signals. Therefore, the multi-mode problem of EMAT is still an important issue to be solved. In order to solve this problem, a new type of directional magnetic-concentrator-type electromagnetic acoustic transducer (D-MC-EMAT) is proposed to generate a single S-0 mode in plates. The magnetic concentrator is added to the traditional EMAT to guide and concentrate the magnetic field generated by the magnet and remove the unwanted A(0) mode. Both finite element simulation and experiments proved that the mode selectivity of proposed D-MC-EMAT improved by adding the magnetic concentrator, and transducer characteristics and defect inspection experiments were carried out. Finally, the structure of D-MC-EMAT was optimized by an orthogonal experiment and the optimal parameter combination was confirmed. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) have been widely applied in nondestructive testings and structural health monitoring. This paper proposes a flexible surface wave electromagnetic acoustic transducer (FSW-EMAT), which uses flexible rubber magnets instead of hard permanent magnets, in order to achieve the defects detection of steel pipe or other ferromagnetic structures with a certain surface curvature. Traditional EMATs mainly consist of three parts: magnet, coil and metal specimen to be tested. Permanent magnets or electromagnets are generally used to produce the strong magnetic flux density. However, the two kinds of magnets are not suitable for the defect detection of metal specimens with a certain curvature. The proposed FSW-EMAT in this paper adopts a flexible magnet, which is a mixture of rubber and iron powder and has strong flexibility to fit the bent specimen. The proposed FSW-EMAT can be easily applied in the testing of curved structural component and detect axial and circumferential defects by rotating the transducer.

Quantitative Detection of Lamination Defect in Beams Based on Space-frequency-wavenumber Method EI CSCD PKU

In order to depict the propagation characteristics of Lamb waves in beams, and quantitatively detect the lamination defect, an aluminium beam structure is used as a research object by using both finite element and experimental analysis, respectively. Based on the combination of Matlab and ABAQUS, a three-dimensional finite element model of aluminum beam with lamination defect is constructed. By extracting the time domain signal of the rectangular receiving area covering the defect, the behaviours of Lamb wave interacts with lamination defect are studied. Two circumstance, symmetric boundary and free boundary, are simulated to discuss the consistency and difference of the amplitude distribution in the wavefield. The phenomena of the incident wave amplitude varies with the beam width is obtained. Meanwhile, the EMAT/laser detection system is set up to verify the finite element simulation results, and found that the two have good consistency. For the complex time domain information in the received waveforms, the space-frequency-wavenumber method is used to locate and quantitatively evaluate the lamination defect in the aluminum beam. The results of the study indicate that the measurement error is about 6% in both simulation and experimental analysis by using space-frequency-wavenumber method. © 2019 Journal of Mechanical Engineering.

After a chain composed of light particles is inserted into a one-dimensional heavy granular chain of spheres, the formed composite chain can trap strongly nonlinear solitary waves (SNSWs) in a light sectional chain The light sectional chain can reduce the peak amplitude of pulse waves imposed on the objects contacting with the end particle of the chain. However, the effects of the light sectional chain's properties on the propagation velocity and amplitude of both the trapped and output pulse waves are unclear. In this study, finite element models with optimal parameters were established to investigate the multireflection behaviors of the output pulse waves. Both the simulation and experimental results demonstrated that the light sectional chain could act as a physical regulator to tune the properties of the output pulse waves in the composite chain. When the material of the light particle was fixed, both the propagation velocity and amplitude of the output pulse waves exhibited the exponentially downward trend as the number of light particles increased. Compared to the light sectional chain of Brass, the PTFE chain could cause more serious attenuation on the amplitude of the pulse waves and reduce the propagation velocity of the output pulse waves Similar phenomena had been reported in simulation results only at the nanoscale. Even at the macroscale, the investigated composite chain could quantitatively tune the propagation characteristics of the trapped and output pulse waves by adjusting the material and number of light particles.
