Novel effective spectrum broadening technology pumped by 2 μm picosecond laser for mid-infrared supercontinuum generation SCIE

Using thulium-doped fiber laser to pump fluoride fiber is one of the most common methods to generate mid- infrared supercontinuum (SC). But it is difficult to generate SC spectrum with wavelength more than 4 mu m by directly pumping short fluoride fiber with 2 mu m picosecond (ps) laser. Although some studies with SC exceeding 4 mu m have also been reported, the proportion of spectral power in the long-wavelength region is not very high. To address this issue, a novel and simple approach to solve low peak power of 2 mu m ps pump sources is introduced by adding a short piece of holmium-doped fiber. This method can make full use of the gain bandwidth of Ho3+ and soliton self-frequency shift effect to enhance soliton energy and promote spectral broadening. The effectiveness of the approach is verified by constructing a theoretical model to solve the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We demonstrate through simulations that addition of holmium-doped fiber can yield significantly improved output spectral range, power ratio in the long-wavelength region and optical-optical conversion efficiency compared to the previous technical. Especially, the implementation of the new technology can effectively expand the SC long-wavelength edge by similar to 470 nm after applying a 3 dB gain, and can easily build a simple, compact and low-cost mid-infrared light source system.

We report high-power pedestal-free ultrashort pulses in a cascade compression system. In the self-compression stage, the 2 mu m ultrashort pulses with 123 fs duration and up to 21.7 W output power were obtained in a 0.3 m 50 mu m core diameter fiber. It is the highest self-compressing power ever obtained in a silica fiber with an all-fiber 2 mu m laser amplifier as the pump source. To obtain purer pedestal- eliminated pulses, we further increase the fiber length to 1 m to trigger the soliton self-frequency shifting (SSFS) effect. By employing an enhanced SSFS technique based on third- order dispersion (TOD) and filtering out the unshifted signal light, we finally achieved sub-150 fs, 10W-class, 1.2-MW peak-power, pedestal-free 2.07 mu m ultrashort pulses. This is also the highest, to the best of our knowledge, power and energy of Raman soliton obtained by SSFS in an ordinary silica fiber. (c) 2024 Optica Publishing Group

Generation of a MW-class tunable Raman soliton up to 3.8 μm in a fluorotellurite fiber SCIE

We report the generation of MW-class tunable Raman soli- tons of 3.3-3.8 mu m in a fluorotellurite fiber. The pump source of the mid-infrared fiber is a 2.15-2.3 mu m Raman soliton source which has the highest peak-power Raman soliton (3.8 MW) ever achieved in a silica fiber. Fluorotellurite fiber is characterized by its short length and high nonlinearity, preventing the Raman soliton pulse broadening that occurs with fiber dispersion. The Raman soliton shifted to 3.8 mu m while still maintaining an ultra-narrow pulse width of 70.4 fs with 1.36 W output power and 1.17 MW peak power. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest peak-power Raman soliton obtained in a mid-infrared fiber. (c) 2024 Optica Publishing Group. We demonstrate tunable high-power, high-energy Raman solitons with the range of 1.9-2.3 mu m in large mode area (LMA) fibers and an optimized fundamental-mode matching technique for coupling LMA silica fibers. Finally, we obtained Raman solitons with a maximum output power of 5.8 W and a maximum pulse energy of 105 nJ in a LMA passive fiber with 32 mu m core diameter, the tuning range of Raman soliton is 1.96-2.35 mu m. In addition, we obtained Raman solitons with a maximum output power of 7.3 W and a maximum pulse energy of 126 nJ in a LMA passive fiber with 48 mu m core diameter, the tuning range of Raman soliton is 1.96-2.27 mu m. The output power of 7.3 W is the highest Raman soliton power currently available in silica fibers, and the result fills a gap in the generation of both high-power and high-energy Raman solitons in a LMA silica fiber.

In this work, a multiband microwave waveforms transmitting system was demonstrated based on all-optical dual fiber combs. Two optical fiber frequency combs via cascaded four waves mixing process ensure the coherence of the system by sharing the pump light. The high-speed frequency tuning of the pump laser will be transferred to each newly generated comb line through the nonlinear effect in the fiber. The comb pairs of the same order obtained through filtering transform the frequency chirp in the optical domain to the frequency chirp in the electrical domain after being beat on the PD. By changing the parameters of the control signal, the center frequency, bandwidth, PRF and envelope of the multi band microwave signal can be flexibly reconfigurable. Thanks to the coherence of dual optical frequency combs, microwave signals all show excellent line-type, high signal to noise ratio and no burrs. As a result, the chirped microwave signals of triangle wave, sine wave and sawtooth wave types are obtained at the repetition rate of 500 Hz. Overall, multi-band chirped microwave generation system based on all-optical system provides a practical device for transmitting and receiving multi band radar.
