What contributes more to BRI economic growth, renewable or non-renewable energy consumption: A third generation panel data analysis SCIE

Given the increasing investment by Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) participants in the renewable energy industry, it is imperative to ascertain how much this investment contributes to economic growth. The objective of this study is to ascertain the extent to which renewable energy contributes to economic growth within the Belt and Road Initiative compared to non-renewable energy sources. Prior studies have yet to incorporate oil prices as a variable in the production function, among other output aspects. This study integrates the inclusion of real oil prices as a variable within the production function alongside capital, labor, renewable energy consumption, and non-renewable energy consumption. A cohort including 49 Belt and Road Initiative participants was formed, encompassing data from 1990 to 2019. The data has undergone an initial examination to assess cross-sectional dependence, slope heterogeneity, and structural break(s), and are verified. Hence, third-generation panel data analysis has been utilized. The continuously updated fully modified estimator and continuously updated biased corrected estimator provide evidence supporting the notion that renewable energy plays a substantial role in fostering economic growth within nations participating in the Belt and Road Initiative. Furthermore, this contribution is found to be more pronounced when compared to the impact of non-renewable energy sources. The study's findings inform policy recommendations at both the BRI and national level.

The innovation consumption mode of distributed renewable energy under resource bricolage: A case study of China SCIE

Developing distributed renewable energy is an inevitable choice for China to deal with environmental pollution and energy security. At present, the consumption of distributed renewable energy in China mainly depends on the power grid, but the amount of absorption is not ideal. Therefore, it is necessary to study the consumption mode of distributed renewable energy. This paper first analyzes the necessity of implementing the innovative consumption of distributed renewable energy power in China, discusses the consumption path of distributed renewable energy innovation based on resource bricolage, and analyzes the users in the innovation consumption path of distributed renewable energy power under the resource patchwork. It then proposes the innovation consumption mode of distributed renewable energy power under the resource patchwork: with distributed energy points as the center, the consumption model of "distributed renewable energy power + decentralized economy" is established. On this basis, the consumption mode of "distributed renewable energy power + distributed economy" is established. Finally, the dilemma of implementing the consumption model of distributed renewable energy under resource patchwork is discussed, and some suggestions are put forward for implementing the consumption model of distributed renewable energy under resource patchwork in China. The innovations in this paper include: (1) Analyzing the consumption of distributed renewable energy from the perspective of resource patchwork. (2) Pointing out the innovation absorption path of distributed renewable energy from the perspective of resource patchwork. (3) Proposing two modes of innovation consumption of distributed renewable energy power under the resource patchwork, namely "distributed renewable energy power + decentralized economy" consumption mode and "distributed renewable energy power + distributed economy" consumption mode.

The evolution analysis of low-carbon power transition strategies and carbon emission decoupling based on carbon neutrality target SCIE

It is necessary for China to accelerate the low-carbon power transition to realize the carbon neutrality target by 2060. Based on the goal of carbon neutrality, Deep Reinforcement Learning with the Double Q-learning method is used to solve a multi-agent game in 30 provinces of China, in an attempt to explore the evolutionary process of regional low-carbon power transition strategies, carbon emissions, and carbon emission decoupling with economic growth. Conclusions are obtained as follows. First, regional low-carbon power transition strategies are not consistent. Though China is bound to achieve the carbon peak and carbon neutrality, the carbon peak and carbon neutrality process will vary widely across regions and over time. Second, the cost of power decarbonization is higher in resource-based regions than that in core regions. The regional coordination policy can reduce the total carbon emissions in resource-based regions, but it will not alleviate their carbon emission decoupling costs. Third, the stable strategy of low-carbon power transition needs faster economic development and more abundant zero-carbon resources. Therefore, the carbon neutrality policy is suggested to be more spatially differentiated, more equitable, and more robust.

Robotic assembly line balancing considering the carbon footprint objective with cross-station design SCIE

Robotic assembly lines are widely applied in the manufacturing sector to produce a wide range of products because of their efficiency and multifunctionality. The robotic assembly line balancing problem (RALBP) is a combinatorial optimization problem where the decision variables are task assignment and robot allocation. However, RALBP considering carbon footprint, which is a very significant environmental concern, has scarcely been studied in the literature and a practical "cross-station"design is never mathematically formulated. In this paper, a mixed -integer programming model is proposed to optimize the two objectives according to the Pareto principle. A particle swarm algorithm (PSO) with some improvement rules is designed to solve the problem. To examine the efficiency of the algorithm, computational experiments including five medium-sized and five large -sized datasets are conducted. The results show that the efficiency of PSO is better than that of four other classic algorithms in terms of three evaluation metrics. Further, the production manager and assembly line designer can choose the appropriate production plan and upgrade the line configuration.

Complexity-Based Structural Optimization of Deep Belief Network and Application in Wastewater Treatment Process SCIE

Deep belief network (DBN) is an effective deep learning model, which can learn the complex data by extracting features hierarchically. However, the successful application of DBN depends on the suitable size of the structure (the number of hidden neurons), which is still an open problem. Currently, the network structure size is basically determined by experience with a time-consuming process. In this article, a complexity-based structural optimization (CBSO) algorithm, based on multiobjective ordinal optimization (MOO), is developed for designing the DBN structure. First, the problem formulation of structural optimization of DBN is given, where the multiple objectives are to minimize the fitting error and complexity. Second, the lower bound for alignment probability in optimizing DBN structure is developed according to MOO. Finally, an effective method to maximize the probability of correct select is given to pursue the good tradeoff between the complexity and the performance. The performance of proposed CBSO algorithm is demonstrated via predicting and controlling water quality of wastewater treatment process (WWTP) using the CBSO-DBN-based model predictive control (MPC) strategy. The simulation results show that the resulting CBSO-DBN can find the better structure design by using CBSO algorithm with smaller fitting error and limited computational complexity, and thereby achieve the better performance in WWTP than its peers. Especially, the CBSO-DBN-MPC improves the control accuracy by 76.16% and computational complexity by 50.45%, respectively.

Environmental benefits of energy poverty alleviation, renewable resources, and urbanization in North Africa SCIE SSCI

Addressing energy poverty via expanding renewable energy sources and advancing sustainable development strategy is a crucial goal for developing nations. Therefore, the study aims to investigate relationships between carbon dioxide emission, renewable and nonrenewable energy resources, economic growth, urbanization, and energy poverty in the North African region, namely: Tunisia, Sudan, Morocco, Libya, and Egypt from 1993 to 2021, by employing Panel PMG ARDL and Granger causality approaches. According to empirical results, addressing energy poverty (access to electricity), economic growth, and using renewable and nonrenewable energy sources worsen the environment. Two-way causal relationships are founded between environmental deterioration and other variables: economic growth, energy resources, and urbanization. Based on the findings, policymakers should step up their efforts to promote green urbanization and alleviate energy poverty through renewable energy sources.

Considering the complexity of energy systems and the uncertainties surrounding the transition path, governments must take into account not only environmental concerns but also energy security and affordability in economic progress pathways. Therefore, using population growth and energy usage as control variables, the influence of the energy trilemma index on economic progress in the North African region is explored from 1990 to 2020. Advanced econometric approaches, particularly cross-sectional dependence, and second-generation tests, are used for empirical investigation. In addition, for short-run estimates, the generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation with fixed and random effects is utilized, while for estimation in the long-run, generalized least squares (GLS) estimations for a fixed and random effect, while, fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) and dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) are used for robustness check. Our results refer to the positive significant influence of energy trilemma and energy usage on economic progress and the negative significant influence of population growth on economic progress. In addition, a two-way causal linkage exists between energy trilemma and economic progress, while population growth and energy usage cause economic progress. This may stress policymakers to accelerate the energy transition to low-carbon energies, appropriately use the nation's human resources, and promote energy efficiency.

Economic cost, energy transition, and pollutant mitigation: The effect of China's different mitigation pathways toward carbon neutrality SCIE

Mitigation pathways play a vital role in realizing carbon neutrality. However, the complex relationships within the social system remain unclear, particularly the economic and energy effects on a macroeconomic level and the critical sectors. This study assesses the economic cost and energy transition effects of different policy scenarios based on an improved dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model. The results show that (1) energy structure optimization (E2) and integrated policy scenarios could achieve the carbon neutrality target. In addition, carbon sink is another critical factor that can offset the remaining emissions. (2) Projected GDP losses in 2060 fluctuate from 0.7% in the carbon trading scenario (C1) to 4.92% in E2. Energy structure optimization and energy technology scenarios exert greater impacts on the power and iron and steel sectors. (3) The energy structure optimization scenario (high renewable HR: 9.23 billion tce) has the most significant impact on energy consumption, whereas the energy technology policy scenario (E2: 9.48 billion tce) has the smallest effect on energy consumption. (4) One integrated policy scenario (HRC4E2: 7.1 x 104 tons) has the most prominent air pollutant reduction potential, followed by LRC2E2 (25.0 x 104 tons) and HRC3E1 (10.1 x 104 tons).

Addressing extensive global goals including growing energy-sourced electricity and advancing sustainable development plans strongly depends on natural gas as a transition fuel to renewable forms of energy. Therefore, by using pooled, random, and fixed-effects models, the current study investigates the effects of electricity sourced from natural gas (ENG), renewable energy (RE), and trade in information and communication technologies (ICTs) on economic growth and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in Africa's top three natural gas producers, Algeria, Egypt, and Nigeria, from 1990 to 2020. The findings indicate that CO2, ENG, ICT trade, and urbanization (UP) are all strongly and positively correlated to economic progress, with the exception of RE, which has an insignificant influence. For the environment, data indicate that RE and GDP degrade the environment while ENG and ICT trade boost it. The causality results that ENG and RE cause both economic growth and CO2 emissions. Based on these empirical results, it is recommended that policymakers should step up their efforts to usage natural gas as a transition fuel to renewable energy sources and acknowledge the advantages of the significant contribution that green ICT trade can make to economic advancement and a clean environment.

Driving Factors of CO2 Emissions in China's Power Industry: Relative Importance Analysis Based on Spatial Durbin Model SCIE SSCI

The low-carbon transformation of the power industry is of great significance to realize the carbon peak in advance. However, almost a third of China's CO2 emissions came from the power sector in 2019. This paper aimed to identify the key drivers of CO2 emissions in China's power industry with the consideration of spatial autocorrelation. The spatial Durbin model and relative importance analysis were combined based on Chinese provincial data from 2003 to 2019. This combination demonstrated that GDP, the power supply structure and energy intensity are the key drivers of CO2 emissions in China's power industry. The self-supply ratio of electricity and the spatial spillover effect have a slight effect on increasing CO2 emissions. The energy demand structure and CO2 emission intensity of thermal power have a positive effect, although it is the lowest. Second, the positive impact of GDP on CO2 emissions is decreasing, but that of the power supply structure and energy intensity is increasing. Third, the energy demand of the industrial and residential sectors has a greater impact on CO2 emissions than that of construction and transportation. For achieving the CO2 emission peak in advance, governments should give priority to developing renewable power and regional electricity trade rather than upgrading thermal power generation. They should also focus on promoting energy-saving technology, especially tapping the energy-saving potential of the industry and resident sectors.
