Robust estimation of channel similarity networks from epilepsy EEG data SCIE

Selecting appropriate measurement to characterize the connection strength is of great significance to construct epileptic brain network for the purpose of brain disease course recognition. In this paper, Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence is introduced as an effective measure to describe the similarity between EEG channels, and the network based on KL divergence is used to identify the significant differences of special channels and detect seizures. First, the KL divergence is calculated based on the empirical cumulative distribution function, and the inverse divergence connecting matrix is constructed according to the symmetrized KL divergence. Then the node strength, weighted clustering coefficient, weighted characteristic path length and small-world property of morphometric similarity brain network are calculated based on the connecting matrix. Finally, Wilcoxon signed-rank significance test is adopted to analyze the differences between the different periods of epilepsy for the channel from different perspectives. The experiment is conducted on the original EEG signal and EEG signals under different frequency bands, and different complex network measures are calculated respectively. At the significance level of 0.05, it is found that the channels with significant differences during seizures are FP1-F7, T7-P7, F4-C4, FP2-F8 and P8-O2 for CHB-MIT dataset. In addition, the dynamic changes of node strength of each channel, mean weighted clustering coefficient and mean weighted characteristic path length over time are visualized to explore the significant changes in the long course of epileptic evolution, and the significant changes are found before the onset of the seizure.

Epilepsy is a chronic brain disease caused by excessive discharge of brain neurons. Long-term recurrent seizures bring a lot of trouble to patients and their families. Prediction of different stages of epilepsy is of great significance. We extract pearson correlation coefficients (PCC) between channels in different frequency bands as features of EEG signals for epilepsy stages prediction. However, the features are of large feature dimension and serious multi-collinearity. To eliminate these adverse influence, the combination of traditional dimension reduction method principal component analysis (PCA) and logistic regression method with regularization term is proposed to avoid over-fitting and achieve the feature sparsity. The experiments are conducted on the widely used CHB-MIT dataset using different regularization terms L1 and L2, respectively. The proposed method identifies various stages of epilepsy quickly and efficiently, and it presents the best average accuracy of 94.86%, average precision of 96.71%, average recall of 93.48%, average kappa value of 0.90 and average Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) value of 0.90 for all patients.

New fixed-time/preassigned-time stability results of impulsive systems and its application to synchronization of delayed octonion-valued neural networks SCIE

In this paper, in order to obtain more accurate settling time estimation and overcome the complexity of the theoretical analysis caused by using decomposition method, the problem of fixed-time (F-T) and preassignedtime (P-T) synchronization of delayed octonion-valued neural networks with impulsive effects is explored by utilizing direct octonion approach. First, a new fixed-time stability theorem for impulsive system is presented by using the comparison principle, average impulsive interval and Bernoulli differential equation theory. Second, to solve the problems of non associative and non commutative laws of octonion, some novel lemmas are introduced, which are the basis of the direct octonion approach. Third, under the improved F-T stability result, a new P-T stability theorem is derived and the settling time is preassigned according to realistic need and is irrelevant with any initial values and any parameters. Then, based on newly established theorems and developed controller strategies, some sufficient conditions are deduced to guarantee F-T and P-T synchronization of the discussed systems. Finally, a numerical simulation is provided to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Quantized control for predefined-time synchronization of inertial memristive neural networks SCIE

In this paper, the predefined-time synchronization of inertial memristive neural networks (IMNNs) is explored. Firstly, based on differential inclusion theory, the system with discontinuous connection weights is transformed into a differential inclusion. Secondly, two more general theorems are given to ensure that the zero solution of the error system is stable within a predefined time. Then, four quantized controllers with state variable and its first-order derivative are designed, which effectively avoids the complex analysis caused by reduced-order method and saves communication resources. Furthermore, some criteria of predefined-time synchronization for IMNNs are derived by using non-reduced order method and the new predefined-time stability theorem. Finally, the effectiveness of the obtained results is verified by a numerical simulation.

In this paper, a type of delayed Clifford-valued memristor-based neural networks (CLVMNNs) with impulsive disturbances is established, and the global exponential stability is investigated by using generalized norm. Firstly, the n-dimensional Clifford-valued systems are decomposed into 2(m) n-dimensional real-valued systems to address the non-commutativity problem of the multiplication of Clifford numbers. Secondly, the generalized infinity-norm and 1-norm are introduced to induce the global exponential stability for CLVMNNs, and two special Lyapunov functionals are established to prove the stability. Thirdly, the strict assumption of the boundedness of activation function in previous research is loosened, and some less conservative conditions of stability are obtained based on the constructed Lyapunov functionals. Finally, the theoretical results are verified by two numerical simulations, and an image encryption scheme is proposed to show the application in real world situation based on the delayed CLVMNNs.

Complex dynamics of a four-species food web model with nonlinear and fear effect SCIE

In this paper, a four -species food web model is formulated to investigate the influence of fear effect and nonlinear top predator harvesting on the dynamical behaviors. The global stability of the system at the interior equilibrium is explored by Li-Muldowney geometric approach. By applying the Sotomayor's theorem, it is shown that the system undergoes transcritical bifurcation and pitchfork bifurcation. The conditions for the occurrence of Hopf bifurcation are established, and the stability of the bifurcating limit cycle is discussed by normal form theory. Finally, the numerical simulations are carried out. It is observed that the system presents chaotic dynamics, periodic window and chaotic attractors. Two distinct routes to chaos are discovered, one is period doubling cascade and the other is the generation and destruction of quasi -periodic states. Moreover, it is found that the fear effect can suppress fluctuations in population density to stabilize the system.

A model of memristor-based quaternion-valued fuzzy neural networks (MQVFNNs) with delayed impulses and time -varying delays is established, and the synchronization issue is investigated in this paper. Firstly, to avoid non-commutativity, the MQVFNNs are decomposed into real -valued delayed impulsive neural networks. Secondly, a novel lemma for delayed impulsive system is introduced based on Halanay differential inequality. Then, by employing the theory of differential inclusion and the proposed lemma, some sufficient conditions are deduced to guarantee the global exponential synchronization of memristive quaternion-valued fuzzy neural networks under a simple delayed nonlinear control scheme. Finally, a numerical simulation is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of our theoretical results.

In this paper, we revisit a Leslie type predator-prey system with strong Allee effect on prey and simplified Holling type IV functional response proposed. Some more complex dynamical properties have been discovered. First, it is proved that the system exhibits a degenerate cusp of codimension 4 and a degenerate focus, saddle or elliptic of codimension 3 for different parameter values analytically. Further, various possible high codimensional bifurcation analyses are performed. It is shown that the system undergoes degenerate focus, saddle or elliptic type Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation of codimension 3 and degenerate cusp type Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation of codimension 4 as the parameters vary. Moreover, the existence and spatial location of the limit cycles are explored by calculating Hopf bifurcation and homoclinic bifurcation surfaces. Numerical simulations are carried out, and it is observed that three limit cycles coexist.

Dual-Teacher Feature Distillation: A Transfer Learning Method for Insomniac PSG Staging SCIE

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder linked with adverse long-term medical and psychiatric outcomes. Automatic sleep staging plays a crucial role in aiding doctors to diagnose insomnia disorder. Only a few studies have been conducted to develop automatic sleep staging methods for insomniacs, and most of them have utilized transfer learning methods, which involve pre-training models on healthy individuals and then fine-tuning them on insomniacs. Unfortunately, significant differences in feature distribution between the two subject groups impede the transfer performance, highlighting the need to effectively integrate the features of healthy subjects and insomniacs. In this paper, we propose a dual-teacher cross-domain knowledge transfer method based on the feature-based knowledge distillation to improve the performance of sleep staging for insomniacs. Specifically, the insomnia teacher directly learns from insomniacs and feeds the corresponding domain-specific features into the student network, while the health domain teacher guide the student network to learn domain-generic features. During the training process, we adopt the OFD (Overhaul of Feature Distillation) method to build the health domain teacher. We conducted the experiments to validate the proposed method, using the Sleep-EDF database as the source domain and the CAP-Database as the target domain. The results demonstrate that our method surpasses advanced techniques, achieving an average sleep staging accuracy of 80.56% on the CAP-Database. Furthermore, our method exhibits promising performance on the private dataset.

Multiple bifurcations in a predator-prey system of modified Holling and Leslie type with double Allee effect and nonlinear harvesting SCIE

In this paper, a modified Leslie-type predator-prey model with simplified Holling type IV functional response is established, in which double Allee effect on prey and nonlinear prey harvesting are considered. The analysis of the model shows that there exists a Bogdanov-Takens singularity (focus case) of codimension 4, and also multiple other nonhyperbolic and degenerate equilibria. Bifurcations are explored and it is found that transcritical bifurcation, saddle-node bifurcation, Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation of codimension 2, degenerate cusp type Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation of codimension 3, and degenerate focus type Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation of codimension 4 occur as parameters vary. The bifurcations result in complex dynamic behaviors, such as double limit cycle, triple limit cycle, quadruple limit cycle, cuspidal loop, (multiple) homoclinic loop, saddle-node loop, and limit cycle(s) simultaneously with homoclinic loop. We run numerical simulations to verify the theoretical results, and it is found that the system admits bistability, tristability, or even tetrastability.(c) 2022 International Association for Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (IMACS).
