In order to solve the problems of weak lateral resistance and inadequate seismic defense of traditional air condenser bracket structures, two air-cooled bent frame specimens were designed and manufactured. One was consisting of two concrete pipe columns with conventional diameter, the other was consisting of two pipe columns with minor diameter and a multi-segment-connected buckling-restrained brace (BRB). The seismic tests of two bent structures under cyclic loading were carried out, and the seismic performance was compared and analyzed, including the cracking state and its development process of pipe columns, horizontal force-lateral displacement hysteresis curves, stiffness degradation, skeleton curves and so on. The characteristics of the axial force and deformation hysteresis curves of the single diagonal BRB and the working mechanism improving the seismic performance were studied. The tests prove that the BRB starts yielding to dissipate seismic energy when the lateral displacement angle is about 1/750, and it does not fail until the angle reaches about 1/30, which increases the structural damping and stablizes the energy dissipation, the earthquake-resistant capability is increased significantly. © 2021, Editorial Office of Journal of Building Structures. In this study, detailed finite element analysis was conducted to examine the seismic performance of square and circular hollow steel braces under axial cyclic loading. Finite element models of braces were constructed using ABAQUS finite element analysis (FEA) software and validated with experimental results from previous papers to expand the specimen's matrix. The influences of cross-section shape, slenderness ratio, and width/diameter-to-thickness ratio on hysteretic behavior and compressive-tensile strength degradation were studied. Simulation results of parametric studies show that both square and circular hollow braces have a better cyclic performance with smaller slenderness and width/diameter-to-thickness ratios, and their compressive-tensile resistances ratio significantly decreases from cycle to cycle after the occurrence of the global buckling of braces.

Short-time Fourier transformation (STFT) has been widely recognized as an intuitive time-frequency analysis method. However, its application in building structures is constrained by its low accuracy of low-frequency recognition in short data. Accordingly, an all-phase chirp-z transformation (AP-CZT) proposed for frequency recognition in building structures. Specifically, the autoregressive (AR) model, which has a proposed order determination algorithm, is used to solve the problem of data length limitation in the all-phase data process. Subsequently, an algorithm based on absolute inverse proportional function (AIP) is developed for post-refinement frequency correction. To verify its actual application, the ap-CZT method is used to analyze simulating finite element model and white noise feedback data from the actual shake table. The ap-CZT method is proven to be capable of correctly finding high-order frequencies. Moreover, it can accurately identify signal frequencies in short data. Therefore, the ap-CZT method can be applied as a frequency identification method in STFT in the field of building structures.

The characteristics of the lateral and torsional seismic responses of steel braced concrete frame structures are studied. It is revealed that the dynamic buckling of steel brace will have an impact on the resistance torque during the repeated loading process, and the plastic hinge state of the structure will change imbalanced, resulting in inelastic torsion. By using D'alembert principle, the mechanism of the steel braced structure causing inertial force, inertial torque and inelastic torsional surge induced by the brace buckling is studied, and the similar performance is verified by shaking table test and finite element nonlinear analysis. The anti-torsion effect of buckling-restrained braces on structures and the working mechanism of preventing inelastic torsional burst of structures are studied. Finally, suggestions are proposed to use the ordinary steel braces as the first seismic defense line of CBF concrete frame structures, and the technical measures of using buckling-restrained braces to reduce of inelastic torsion are given. The characteristics of seismic-induced inelastic torsion in frame-bent structures in the main buildings of large thermal power plants are investigated. On the basis of a real engineering design scheme, nonlinear finite element models for seismic time-history analysis are established in SAP2000. The variation of structural lateral displacement, nonlinear torsion and the internal forces of main structural elements are analyzed. It is revealed that the buckling of the steel braces is the main reason for the nonlinear torsion and its rapid increment. The presence of nonlinear torsion contributes to a distortional displacement field, and could be harmful to the key elements of low ductility that connect the roof truss or crane hoist etc. to the structure. The ratio of torsional displacement to lateral displacement defined in some standards is studied to find that it hardly suites to the situation of inelastic torsion. This phenomenon and its reason are analyzed. Some technical suggestions to decrease the nonlinear torsion are put forward. © 2017, Engineering Mechanics Press. All right reserved.

For increasing the seismic capabilities of existing concrete frames, a steel frame with buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) is externally added without significant increment of inner forces within the existing frame. One pure concrete frame model and two concrete frame models retrofitted with externally added BRB steel frames were designed and manufactured, and statically cyclic loading tests were conducted. Seismic performance of the structures, including the status of cracks and failures, the hysteretic shear force-lateral displacement curves, the skeleton curves, the degradation of equivalent stiffness, the equivalent damping ratio, and the relation between strain and shear force in the external steel frames and the concrete beams, has been investigated through the tests. It is indicated that with the externally added steel frames, the hysteretic shear force-displacement curves have full shapes while the failure mechanism is improved reasonably, and BRBs can dissipate seismic energy stably. Shear bearing capacity of the retrofitted structures can increase by at least two times than that of the existing concrete frame. The existing structure, the added steel frames and the installed BRBs coordinate well. Within the seismic design target, the brittle compression-shear failure of concrete columns can thus be avoided. Finally, the design suggestions for improving the connection details of the externally added steel frames has been put forward. © 2017, Editorial Office of Journal of Building Structures. This paper mainly studied the problems and demand of seismic strengthening of RC frame structure, and proposed a fast and efficient seismic strengthening method, which used the concrete-tube buckling-restrained braces and buckling-restrained braced frames. Three frame specimens were designed, manufactured and tested under reversed cyclic loadings, including one original frame and two buckling-restrained braced frames with different brace types, i.e. monoclinic brace and herringbone brace. The test demonstrates the feasibility of the additional buckling-restrained braced frames, which was designed according to this paper. Seismic performances of the additional buckling-restrained braced frames, such as concrete element cracks, lateral load-displacement loops, skeleton curves, BRB load-deformations forces of RC frame, the equivalent viscous damping ratio and tangent stiffness, etc, were studied. The results show that the additional buckling-restrained braced frames, the embedded parts and the connecting constructions are reliable, and the additional buckling-restrained braced frames show excellent seismic force reduction and energy dissipation capacity. The system has rich and stable hysteretic load-displacement curves. The BRB yields at low inter-story drift angle, and can keep effective at large lateral inter-story drift angle. It is validated that the equivalent viscous damping can thus be increased, the seismic response be reduced, and then the structural performance be improved.

To improve seismic properties, some existed concrete frames are retrofitted with Buckling-Restrained Brace (BRB). Considering the insufficient seismic-bearing capacity of the original structures, in-filled steel frames and connected BRBs are used to retrofit. Three concrete frames are designed, built and tested. Two of them are retrofitted with in-filled steel frames and BRB (BRBCF), and the other one is an ordinary frame, which is designed for a comparison. Seismic performance of the frames, including the shear force-lateral displacement hysteretic curves, the skeleton curves, the axial deformation loops, the statistics on equivalent stiffness and the damping ratios, are tested and studied. The results of the tests show that the force-displacement hysteretic curves of the retrofitted frames are stable in shape; the BRB's energy-dissipation ability is stable. It is proved that the load-bearing capacity and structural damping can be both increased in this way. Consequently, the in-filled steel frames can balance the load-bearing capacity of BRBs, which protect the original frames from suffering more severe shear force, excavate the potential ductility of the reinforced concrete floor and beams, and improve the working mechanics. The seismic performance is improved obviously.

In order to improve efficiency and reliability for damage detection, based on the characteristics of truss structures, the elemental modal strain can be derived from the nodal modal displacements by means of the finite element method on spatial truss elements connected by pin at elemental two nodes. Therefore it is presented as a new dynamic detective indicator using changes between an intact structure and a corresponding destructive structure in the elemental lower modal strain, and then a new method of damage localization named as change in elemental modal strain is set up for truss structures. A numerical example for a planar truss structure is provided to verify the practicability of the method only by one lower mode. The results show that this method is effective to locate no.: only single damage but also multiple ones, both light damages and severe ones. Furthermore, the results indicate that the proposed method based on modal strain of truss elements can accurately detect damage locations of truss structures with the noisy modal data.

Three buckling-restrained brace concrete frames (BRBCF) with different BRB or beam sections, which were normal reinforced concrete beam with monoclinic BRB, flat beam with monoclinic BRB, normal reinforced concrete beam with invert-V BRB, were designed, manufactured and tested by quasi-static test. The seismic performance, including cracks on concrete elements, lateral load-displacement loops, skeleton curves, tangent stiffness and its degradation, and BRB load-deformation curves, were studied. Test results show that the BRB and concrete frame can effectively work together to resist lateral force. The system has plump and stable hysteric load-displacement curves. The BRB can start to dissipate energy by yielding at relatively small story drift ratio, and avoid failure at large lateral drift ratio. It is validated that the equivalent viscous damping can thus be increased and the seismic response be reduced, resulting in an improved structural performance. The designed concrete joints, the embedded parts and the connectors function well and reliably.
