This paper proposes a new type of self-centering (SC) damper which exploits the shape memory alloy (SMA) bolts and variable friction mechanism, termed the SMA slip friction damper (SMASFD). The theoretical equations governing the force-displacement relationship, the equivalent stiffness and the equivalent viscous damping are first derived. Then, the application potential of such damper is briefly discussed. In the experimental study, the results of the experimental validations of the SMA bolts and the friction mechanism are presented, followed by the results of proof-of-concept test on the fabricated SMASFDs. According to the testing results, the damper exhibited a symmetric tension-compression flag-shaped hysteresis characterized by excellent SC capacity and good damping capability. The prestrain treatment was applied to the SMA bolts in one test, which was found effectively increased the initial stiffness of the damper. To provide a further understanding on the damper and examine the stress and strain demands of the components, high-fidelity finite element models were established for numerical simulations. Both the analytical method and numerical simulation were validated by the experimental data.

To mitigate the adverse structural responses, an improved version of the traditional tuned vibration absorber has been proposed based on the shape memory alloy spring, referred as the shape memory alloy-spring tuned vibration absorber. The finite element numerical models of the multi-degree-of-freedom structure (e.g., transmission tower) and shape memory alloy-spring tuned vibration absorber are developed by using the commercial software ANSYS, and the nonlinear behavior of the shape memory alloy spring is validated based on a previous experimental study. The damping mechanism of the shape memory alloy-spring tuned vibration absorber attached to a multi-degree-of-freedom structure under seismic excitations is investigated, and the nonlinear hysteretic behavior of the shape memory alloy spring is also discussed. The results show that the proposed damper has a two-stage damping mechanism, and its control performance is remarkable. Because the coupled system response is sensitive to the amplitude level, the optimal configuration of the shape memory alloy-spring tuned vibration absorber can be obtained by parametric analysis. Particularly, because of the nonlinear target energy transfer and transient resonance capture mechanism, the shape memory alloy-spring tuned vibration absorber exhibits stable control ability under different seismic waves, indicating a good stability in vibration control of a multi-degree-of-freedom system.

This paper focuses on the performance-based seismic design (PBSD) methodology of multi-story concentrically braced frames (CBFs) equipped with a novel brace, i.e., the shape memory alloy (SMA)-friction damping brace (SMAFDB). The fundamental response characteristics of the framing structure are first understood through nonlinear response history analysis on the equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems. The parameters varied in the SDOF analyses are the period of vibration (T), the strength reduction factor (R), and the normalized friction slip displacement (μf). The seismic response indexes of interest are the peak displacement, the ductility, the residual displacement and the peak acceleration. Relationships are built between the seismic response indexes and parameters of T, R and μf. Then, the SDOF-based results are explored to develop the PBSD methodology, which defines the peak interstory drift, the peak floor acceleration and the residual interstory drift as the performance targets. To demonstrate and validate the proposed design methodology, the six-story prototype CBFs equipped with SMAFDBs are designed and then subjected to ground motions associated with hazard levels of design basis earthquakes (DBE) and maximum considered earthquakes (MCE). The performance evaluation results indicate that the frames can be effectively designed to meet the targeted performance objectives at the DBE level. Superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) can recover large inelastic deformation meanwhile dissipating energy under loading reversals. This property makes them an attractive alternative for developing structures with desirable self-centering (SC) capability. For SMA braced frames (SMABFs), which have not been codified in current seismic provisions, their deformation demand under earthquakes needs to be estimated with confidence in the phase of seismic design, retrofit or upgrade. In this work, the inelastic displacement ratio, i.e. CR, is explored to address current issue. The fundamental behavior of SMABFs is understood by analyzing the equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems, with the purpose of evaluating and discussing the influence of fundamental period (T), strength reduction ratio (R) and hysteretic parameters of systems (including the secondary stiffness ratio alpha and the hysteresis width beta) on CR. The regression of CR is further conducted to be a function of T, R, alpha, and beta. Subsequently, a CR-based seismic design procedure is developed for multi-story SMABFs. Two frame structures of 3 and 6 stories are utilized to verify the proposed design procedure. The seismic analysis results indicate that the mean responses of designed structures agree well with prescribed performance targets. Although SMABFs are focused in this study, the proposed method could also shed light on the other types of SC structures.

Superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) are capable of recovering large inelastic deformation and dissipating energy under loading reversals, and therefore present promising application in vibration control of engineering structures subjected to dynamic loads. Properties of SMAs are often optimised based on experimental results and treated as deterministic for dynamic analysis of structures with SMA-based devices. This study applies the Metropolis-Hasting algorithm to characterise the uncertainties within an SMA material model and to provide insight into its parameter uncertainty. Cyclic tests of SMA bars are first conducted and the experimental data are analysed using the Markov chain Monte Carlo method. The statistical properties of SMA model parameters are calculated based on posterior parameter distributions. The influence of SMA model parameter uncertainty is further explored on energy dissipation capacity under cyclic tests. The first four L-moment method is applied to transform the posterior parameter distributions into standard normal distribution to further evaluate the influence of model parameter uncertainty on energy dissipation in dynamic analysis.

A systematic modeling study is conducted to predict the dynamic response of magnetorheological (MR) damper based on a refined constitutive model for MR fluids. A particle-level simulation method is first employed to probe the microstructured behavior and rheological properties of MR fluids, based on which the refined constitutive model is developed. The constitutive model is further validated by comparing the predicted results with the data obtained from microscopic simulations and existing experiments. It is revealed that the proposed constitutive model has comparable accuracy and good applicability in representing MR fluids. Subsequently, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is established to explore MR damper's behavior by using the proposed constitutive model to describe the fluid rheology. For better capturing the dynamic hysteretic behavior of MR damper, a modified parametric model is developed by combing the Bingham plastic model and the proposed constitutive model. The modified model for MR damper shows its validity and superiority over the existing Bingham plastic models.

为了提高结构的抗震韧性,减小结构的震后残余变形是一种有效途径.研究了一种包含可更换耗能钢板(energy absorbing steel plate,EASP)的自复位支撑(self-centering brace,SCB),对SCB进行了数值模拟研究,建立有限元模型并进行验证,以此为基础对SCB进行了参数分析,探讨关键参数的改变对SCB滞回性能的影响.结果表明:增大EASP的屈服强度可以提高SCB的承载力,但是增大了残余变形,同时使得SCB在位移较小的情况下难以产生耗能能力;减小钢绞线预应力会导致SCB残余变形增大;缩短钢绞线长度会提高SCB刚度和承载力.为了增强SCB的耗能能力和自复位性能,在实际设计中,建议采用较低屈服强度的EASP,同时在满足SCB变形需求的前提下,对钢绞线施加较大的预应力.

Owing to the unique superelasticity and satisfactory energy dissipation capacity, shape memory alloys (SMAs) show great potential in earthquake engineering. This study focused on establishing analytical method and finite element (FE) model for the buckling-restrained SMA (BRSMA) based self-centering (SC) dampers. For the BRSMA-based SC damper, the lateral deformation of the slender SMA component is constrained by the surrounding buckling-restrained plates (BRPs). Hence, the SMA component avoids buckling induced instability and the damper accordingly exhibits stable cyclic behavior under tension-compression loadings. Although the compressive behavior has been obtained through cyclic loading tests, an in-depth understanding on the corresponding force-displacement relationship is required. As such, a simple analytical method was proposed for estimating the compressive strength capacity of the BRSMA-based SC damper. Besides, the FE model was built to provide additional information that was difficult to obtain in physical model tests. The accuracy of the analytical method and FE model was confirmed by the testing results. The verified FE model was further used to conduct the parametric analysis. The parameters of interest included the shape of the reduced section, the dimension of the BRSMA components, the gap between the BRSMA components and BRPs and the number of bolts. The findings of this paper not only promote understanding on the cyclic behavior of this new damper, but also provide suggestions and guidelines for future design.
