Abstract :

Sliding bearings are a key component of bridges, and their normal performance is an important prerequisite to ensure traffic safety. To solve the problem wherein a single type of sensor has difficulty in effectively predicting the wear life of sliding bearings, this paper proposes a method to predict the sliding bearing wear life using the multitype monitoring data of the bridge. This method uses the vertical acceleration data of the girder with high sampling frequency to calculate the bearing cumulative dynamic displacement under vehicle load and then processes the data collected by the longitudinal displacement gauge with low sampling frequency to extract the bearing cumulative static displacement under the effect of temperature. Next, the daily bearing cumulative displacement calculated by adding them is taken as the evaluation index, and the sliding bearing wear life is predicted based on the reliability analysis. Finally, the proposed method is verified by a numerical example of vehicle-bridge interaction and real bridge monitoring data. The obtained results show that the proposed method can be used to estimate the bearing cumulative displacement with high accuracy and can effectively predict the wear life of sliding bearings. The prediction results can provide an important reference for bridge evaluation.

Seismic performance of RC bridges with double-column medium height bents retrofitted with SCEBs under near-field ground motions SCIE

Abstract :

RC double-column medium height bents (DCMBs) are widely applied in the mountain areas as the substructure of highway bridges, and the two columns are normally connected by RC link beams to enhance the lateral stability. However, serious damage and/or large residual displacement were repeatedly observed in the DCMBs after many major earthquakes, which may make the bridges lose functionality and have to be demolished and rebuilt. In order to improve the seismic performance of the bridges, a novel self-centering variable friction dissipation brace (SCVFB) using SMA plates is developed to replace the traditional RC link beams in the DCMBs in this study. The mechanical properties of the shape memory alloy (SMA) plate were investigated experimentally. Then, the analytical model of the DCMBs with inverted-V SCVFBs (DCMB-SVFB) is built, and the corresponding design philosophies of the SCVFB in the DCMB are proposed based on the concept of structural fuse. Subsequently, the hysteretic behaviors of the DCMB-SCVFB in the transverse direction are analyzed, and the dynamic responses of the whole bridge under near-field ground motions are also investigated. For comparison, the seismic behaviors of the bridges with original bents (the bridges with and without link beams) and the bridges retrofitted with buckling restrained braces (BRBs) are also presented. The results show that the SCVFB has stable energy dissipation capability and excellent self-centering ability, even without the need of prestressing. Compared with the original bridge, the bridges with SCVFBs and BRBs are featured by higher strength, larger stiffness, better energy dissipation capacity, and less damage. In particular, the SCVFB can effectively reduce the residual displacement of the bridge and quickly restore the traffic capacity.

Abstract :

Connections between prefabricated concrete panels (PCPs) are susceptible to cracking and damage, attracting the attention of bridge engineers. Curved bolt connections have ideal flexural performance when they have an appropriate anchorage distance. High-performance materials, such as ultrahigh-performance concrete (UHPC) and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars, bring solutions to further reduce construction resources on-site and improve the durability and mechanical properties of curved bolt connections. In this paper, curved bolt connections with UHPC grout and CFRP tendons (UHPC-CFRP connections) for PCPs were proposed. Prediction models for the flexural capacity, cracking moment, and deflection of UHPC-CFRP connections were proposed. Full-scale flexural tests were carried out to study their working mechanism, and their flexural performances were compared with those of ordinary curved bolt connections. Three-dimensional finite-element numerical models were developed, and the influences of important design factors on flexural capacity were discussed. Both experimental and numerical results showed that the flexural behavior of the PCPs with UHPC-CFRP connections is more desirable than that of curved bolt connections with ordinary materials. The improved models are effective for predicting the flexural response of PCPs with UHPC-CFRP connections.

Quantitative Assessment Framework for the Postearthquake Traffic Flow Capacity of Bridges Based on the Loss Model of Vertical Load-Carrying Capacity SCIE
期刊论文 | 2024 , 29 (3) | JOURNAL OF BRIDGE ENGINEERING
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

This paper aimed to propose an analytical framework for assessing the postearthquake traffic flow capacity of girder bridges based on the loss model of vertical load-carrying capacity. For this purpose, a loss model of the vertical load-carrying capacity of a reinforced concrete (RC) column associated with the residual drift ratio and the damage level (i.e., the modified Park-Ang index) was developed to determine the postearthquake vertical load-carrying capacity accurately and quantitatively. Subsequently, the probability seismic demand analysis (PSDA) was performed to obtain the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of engineering demand parameters (EDPs) (i.e., the residual drift and the damage indicator) and the PDF of postearthquake vertical load-carrying capacity was determined based on the developed loss model. Furthermore, the reliability analysis was utilized to calculate the postearthquake reliability index of a bridge by adjusting the mean values of the live load (which reflects the traffic flow capacity), and the postearthquake traffic flow capacity could then be quantitatively determined based on the live load ratio at a target reliability index. Finally, the proposed framework was implemented on a single-column bridge to demonstrate its efficiency. Compared to traditional qualitative and subjective postearthquake functionality assessment of the damaged bridge, the proposed analytical approach offered a mathematical model for the decision-making process.

Abstract :

Shape memory alloy (SMA) as a high-performance material with intelligent properties, has been recognized as a promising alternative solution for achieving self-centering of the structure. In this study, based on the excellent characteristics of SMA, SMA L-shaped plate was developed and applied to install on the rocking interface of the rocking column to enhance the seismic resilience, and the seismic performance of the self-centering rocking columns with SMA L-shaped plates was investigated through experiment and numerical simulation. To this end, the mechanical properties of SMA plate were firstly investigated experimentally. Then the quasi-static cyclic loading tests of the rocking column with SMA L-shaped plates were carried out, and its hysteresis behavior was investigated under different loading protocols with varying displacement amplitudes. For comparison, a rocking column with steel L-shaped plates was also tested. The experimental results showed that the rocking column with SMA L-shaped plates exhibited excellent flag-shape hysteresis behavior with satisfactory self-centering ability and stable energy dissipation capacity, and owned a large deformation capacity. Subsequently, the dynamic responses of the self-centering rocking column with SMA L-shaped plates were investigated by numerical simulation. It is found that compared to the steel L-shaped plates, the SMA L-shaped plates can effectively reduce the residual displacement responses of the rocking column and quickly restore to normal operation.

Experimental Investigation on Failure Mechanism and Hysteresis Behavior of RC Single- and Double-Column Piers SCIE

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Reinforced concrete (RC) single-column piers (SCPs) and double-column piers (DCPs) are widely used in highway girder bridges. However, the seismic behavior of conventional RC DCPs has not received sufficient attention. This study aimed to investigate the seismic behavior of DCPs, especially the comparison of the failure mechanism, hysteretic behavior, and dynamic response between SCPs and DCPs. To this end, the critical performance parameters between SCPs and DCPs in the elastic phase were first calculated according to the simplified calculation formulas. Eight 1/3 scaled SCPs and DCPs were then fabricated and tested under quasi-static cyclic loading, and the effective height of the DCPs was twice that of the SCPs. The test results showed that the failure modes and damage mechanisms between the SCPs and DCPs are obviously different. In particular, the plastic damage states at the top and bottom of each column in the DCP were asymmetric, and this behavior was also observed on both sides of each plastic hinge region. Subsequently, the relationship between the performance parameters of SCP and DCP in the plastic phase differed from that of the elastic phase and was not proportional. Existing formulas for calculating the plastic hinge length of SCPs cannot effectively predict DCPs and may even underestimate it. Furthermore, numerical simulations were analyzed to investigate the effects of various design parameters and ground motions on the seismic behavior of the SCPs and DCPs.

Abstract :

The traditional reinforced concrete canopy using cast-in-place (CIP) technology, is associated with problems such as long construction period, high environmental pollution, and low construction quality. Prefabricated assembly technology, due to its modern and highly industrialized characteristics, provides a promising solution to address the mentioned challenges. In this study, an innovative Ultra High-Performance concrete (UHPC)-filled grouted corrugated duct connection (UGCDC) approach was introduced for prefabricated canopy beam-column joints, considering the structural characteristics of the canopy. To evaluate the seismic behavior of canopy beam-column joints utilizing the UGCDC method, three comprehensive full-scale quasi-static experiments were conducted. Meanwhile, relevant seismic behavior indexes were extracted from the hysteresis curve, and the seismic performance of canopy joints was assessed by analyzing the effects of different research parameters on seismic behavior indicators. In addition, based on the OpenSees platform, a fiber finite element model (FEM) was established that incorporated the bond-slip behavior at the UGCDC joint. The research results indicated that the seismic behavior of canopy beam-column joints using UGCDC is basically consistent with that of CIP joints, and setting a shear key in UGCDC joints can improve ductility by 22.4 %. In terms of bearing capacity, there is not much difference among the three specimens, but in terms of initial stiffness, the specimen using UGCDC and shear key and the specimen using UGCDC have increased by 6.0 % and 9.6 % compared to CIP specimen, respectively. The developed FEM can predict the hysteresis characteristic of canopy joints using UGCDC. UGCDC method is a reliable connection form for canopy beam-column connection joint, which is suitable for medium to high intensity earthquake areas. Finally, a seismic performance assessment method of prefabricated canopy beam-column joints using UGCDC was proposed.

Mechanical model analysis of column-footing joints with combined socket-corrugated pipe connection SCIE

Abstract :

The socket connection method is widely used in precast column, particularly in seismic regions. However, reducing the socket-depth to lower costs may lead to shear failure in the socketed part of the columns. To address this issue and achieve cost objectives, a new approach combines shallow sockets with corrugated pipes for column-footing joints. Comparative tests were conducted to investigate failure in columns with socketcorrugated pipe connections (SCPC), shallow sockets (SSC), and cast-in-place (CIP). Furthermore, finite element models were employed to validate the experimental and simplified model results. The findings suggest potential shear failure in shallow socket connections, which can be mitigated by using the combined socketcorrugated pipe method that alters force transmission paths. As the axial load ratio increases, both the ultimate lateral load capacity of the specimen and the local stresses at the column base increase. In addition, the ultimate lateral load capacity of the column and the stress of the connection reinforcement are increased by increasing the strength of the longitudinal reinforcement, consequently amplifying the extent of joint area damage. Finally, a simplified strut-and-tie model of the SCPC, validated against numerical and experimental data, accurately represents force paths, ultimate lateral load capacity and failure modes in socket joints.

Abstract :

This study developed a novel prefabricated self-centering U-shaped SMA-Steel hybrid plate damper (SMA-SteelUD) based on the excellent characteristics of SMA, to reduce the residual deformation of the conventional Ushaped Steel plate damper under severe earthquakes. The developed SMA-Steel-UD consisted of U-shaped SMA plates (SMA-Us) and U-shaped steel plates (Steel-Us) assembled in parallel, and its working principle was introduced and the analytical model was established. Then, the mechanical properties of SMA plate were firstly investigated experimentally, and the test results showed that the SMA plate behaved large self-centering capacity and great deformability. Subsequently, the quasi-static cyclic loading tests of the components of the damper including U-shaped SMA plate damper (SMA-UD) and U-shaped Steel plate damper (Steel-UD) and the whole damper were carried out to investigate the hysteretic performance, and to further validate the established analytical model. The experimental results showed that the SMA-Steel-UD exhibited satisfactory flag-shape hysteresis behavior with excellent self-centering ability and stable energy dissipation capacity, and owned a large deformation capacity. Parametric studies were further performed to evaluate the influences of the key parameters of SMA-Steel-UD on the hysteretic performance. To ensure the excellent self-centering capacity of the damper, the total self-centering force of the U-shaped SMA plates should be greater than the total yield force of the U-shaped steel plates.

Shear Behavior of Y-Shaped Perfobond Rib Shear Connector with UHPC Grout SCIE

Abstract :

To improve shear capacity, as well as reduce on-site casting and steel consumption, a novel Y-shaped perfobond rib (Y-PBL) shear connector with ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) grout was proposed. The shear behavior of the Y-PBL shear connector was investigated by six groups of pushout specimens. Their failure modes, load-slip curves, load-separation curves, strain analysis, and shear transfer mechanisms were discussed. Subsequently, finite-element analysis (FEA) models were established to study the effect of parameters on the shear behavior of the Y-PBL shear connector, as well as to compare the shear capacity contributions with straight-shaped PBL (S-PBL) shear connectors. Analytical models were proposed to predict the shear capacity of the Y-PBL shear connector. The results reveal that the proposed Y-PBL shear connector has superior shear capacity and stiffness. The contribution of the perforating rebar is minor compared with the end-bearing effect of UHPC. The analytical predictions agree well with the experimental and FEA results. This study can be used to guide the design and application of the Y-PBL shear connector in steel-concrete composite bridges.
