2 mu m ultra-low relative intensity noise and frequency noise of single frequency fiber laser for next-generation gravitational wave detectors CPCI-S

We demonstrated an ultra-low noise polarization-maintaining (PM) single frequency fiber laser (SFFL) at 2 mu m. By suppressing the pump relative intensity noise using a feedback loop control, the RIN and frequency noise of the SFFL are simultaneously reduced, and the reduction is about 3 - 15 dB and 3 - 8.4 dB, respectively. After two stage Tm3+-doped PM fiber amplifier, the output power reached about 5.2 W. Meanwhile, the frequency noise almost has no increases, which is still below 100 Hz/root Hz after 13 Hz. And the frequency-tunable range is approximately 2 GHz with frequency response of 46 MHz/V.

High-power fiber lasers have experienced a dramatic development over the last decade. Further increasing the output power needs an upscaling of the fiber mode area, while maintaining a single-mode output. Here, we propose an all-solid anti-resonant fiber (ARF) structure, which ensures single-mode operation in broadband by resonantly coupling higher-order modes into the cladding. A series of fibers with core sizes ranging from 40 to 100 mu m are proposed exhibiting maximum mode area exceeding 5000 mu m(2). Numerical simulations show this resonant coupling scheme provides a higher-order mode (mainly TE01, TM01, and HE21) suppression ratio of more than 20 dB, while keeping the fundamental mode loss lower than 1 dB/m. The proposed structure also exhibits high tolerance for core index depression.

A novel scheme for fabricating Yb-doped silica micro structured optical fibers and their application in hightemperature optical fiber sensing are reported. The Yb-doped silica micro structured optical fiber preforms consisted of Yb-doped silica core rods (0.1 wt% for Yb2O3) and holey pure silica claddings fabricated by UVcurable tube molding technology and digital light processing 3D printing technology, respectively. The silica preforms were drawn using the rod-in-tube method to Yb-doped silica micro structured optical fibers without severe distortion. The doped micro structured fibers were applied to high-temperature sensing from 296.15 to 653.15 K. The proposed technology is expected to be effective for the fabrication of various types of rare-earthion-doped silica micro structured optical fibers that can be used in fiber sensors, lasers, and amplifiers.

Frequency-sweeping lasers have drawn considerable attentions, especially in FMCW LIDAR. The frequency sweeping single-frequency PM fiber laser is respectively realized by piezoelectric (PZT) modulation and pump modulation, which using the same Er-doped distributed Bragg reflection (DBR) fiber cavity. The central wavelength is 1552.49 nm with the extinction ratio of above 20 dB. The frequency sweeping range of PZT modulation is seen to be up to 745 MHz under the modulation repetition rate of 1Hz, and the modulation repetition rate of the pump can be tuned from 1Hz to 20 kHz. However, the frequency sweeping range and tunable range of pump modulation is 635 MHz and from 1Hz to 10 kHz, respectively. Comparing with both methods, the PZT modulation has wider sweeping range and tunable range, however, the mechanical resonance will be occurred. The pump modulation indicates virtually linearly frequency modulation. Future works to achieve more characteristic of two modulation methods are undergoing.

Tunable single frequency fiber laser based on injection-locked for coherent detection of LIDAR CPCI-S

We report an injection-locked single-frequency fiber laser with widely tunable repetition rate. A distributed Bragg reflection (DBR) fiber laser with a central wavelength of 1.063 mu m and a single frequency continuous-wave (CW) output is used as the master laser. A Fabry-Perot (F-P) laser diode (LD) with wavelength range of 1.050 mu m to 1.067 mu m is used as the slave laser. The single-frequency pulsed laser output is achieved at 1.063 mu m by controlling pulse, amplitude, temperature of F-P LD and adjusting injection power of DBR fiber laser. The pulse duration can be adjusted between 0.6ns and 40ns. The repetition rate of the laser output can be tuned between 100kHz and 2MHz by tuning the electronic trigger signal. The linewidth is 14MHz when pulse duration is 11ns with repetition rate of 100kHz. The laser with local-oscillator (LO) output shows important value for the applications in the field of coherent LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging).

We report a high-power chirped pulse amplification (CPA) based on nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) oscillator and Yb-doped rod-type photonic crystal fiber (PCF). An all-polarization-maintaining NALM mode-locked fiber oscillator was used providing an average power of 9.4 mW, a pulse duration of 5.3 ps at the repetition rate of 21 MHz. After pulse stretching, selection and amplification, an average power of 120 W with the pulse duration of 145 ps at repetition rate of 4.2 MHz has been achieved. The pulse duration is compressed to 14 ps using a pair of reflective gratings coated by gold film. In order to prevent the damage of the gratings, the compressed average power is limited to 51 W. The compressed pulse average power can be further improved by using transmissive gratings coated by dielectric film.

In the research field of hollow-core optical fiber (HCF), one type of fiber geometry with a leaky mode nature has unexpectedly taken center stage over the last couple of years: the so-called hollow-core anti-resonant fiber (ARF). The guidance mechanism of this ARF has been elucidated explicitly, the optical performance of the fiber has improved significantly, and the range of potential fiber application areas has expanded steadily. This paper will review our continuous efforts to understand, design, and fabricate this hollow-core ARF with the aim of lower loss and wider bandwidth. We also explore the possibility of using an advanced form of ARF in communications applications. In the long journey of looking for optical fibers that provide better performance than conventional solid-core glass fibers, exploitation of the hidden potential of artificial photonic micro-structures will continue to advance.

Preparation of Yb3+-doped silica fiber preform at low temperature CPCI-S

We report a new method to prepare active silica fiber preform at low temperature, not exceeding 1300 degrees C. through the whole process. We prefabricated glass parts with nano-porous structure by UV cure equipment and debinded, the average pore diameter is about 46 nm. To prepare the active fiber preform, several different concentrations of Yb3+ ions were impregnated with solution doping method and further sintering under flowed O-2. After several hours vitrification, the Yb3+-doped silica fiber preform with 0.05 wt%, 0.1 wt% and 0.2 wt% doping concentration were produced, and the size of the final fiber preform is phi 3x39 mm. Then the fiber owning an Yb3+ concentration of 0.1 wt% was drawn by rod-in-tube, the measurements show that Yb3+ ions are homogeneous, central wavelength is 1030 nm, the 3 dB linewidth is about 38 nm, fluorescent lifetime is 1 ms, the fiber has absorption from Yb3+ 7 dB/m at 976 nm. To best of our knowledge, it is first time that active fiber preform is produced by this approach.
